Output Powerpoint to OBS Laptop for Zoom

Hi there,

I'm still starting to learn about OBS. I have this use case:
  • 2 laptops (let's name it Laptop A and Laptop B)
  • Laptop A
    • Connect to HDMI projector which projects to 2 screens.
    • Has the Powerpoint presentation slides.
  • Laptop B
    • Connect to Zoom
What I want is to have the powerpoint slides in Laptop A to be displayed as an overlay in the Laptop B Zoom video screen. I've read about how to do it.

My question now would be what equipment i need in order to send Laptop A's desktop (PPT presentation) to Laptop B? For Laptop A, it has only 1 HDMI port.
I know i need to have Laptop A to send the output to 1) Projector and 2) Laptop B via video capture device. However, as Laptop A only has 1 HDMI port, can i get a HDMI splitter (USB) with 2 HDMI ports plug into Laptop 2 and still achieve having to send to projector and Laptop B?

In a simplified diagram:
Laptop A -> Projector
Laptop A -> Video Capture Device -> Laptop B

This determines what equipment i need to buy before i actually dive in and buy the equipment and ended up not be able to use it.

Or is there a better way to setup this up?

Any advice would be appreciated!

How about setting Laptop A as NDI sources for OBS (assuming both laptop is connected to the same network and that OBS run in laptop B) ? I never done NDI but recently read a suggestion about using it to send display to an external monitor in another room.
Any particular reason why you have to use Laptop B to connect to Zoom ?

So Laptop B is connecting to Zoom so that we don't want to overload Laptop A which is showing the presentation on the projector and we do need to admit attendees in Zoom. So in order not to disrupt the presentation showing in Laptop A, we had to use another laptop for Zoom. Just that everytime, we need to manually use the camera connected to Laptop B and zoom into the projector screen to show the presentation to the Zoom attendees.

In that case, why do you need OBS ? If you already have a projector attached and Zoom can detect that projector screen to share its display then you just need the second laptop as a co-host for meeting control (admit attendees etc).

Hi, thanks for the reply!

Slight confusion here, the Zoom pc cannot detect the projector and it's running just purely for Zoom. What we are doing now is to have the Zoom PC's webcam to directly shoot at the projector screen to have the PPT presentation shown to the Zoom audience. This is not ideal of course, as we would like to have only a portion of the PPT to be shown in the Zoom view as to top 1/4 of the Zoom screen.

If you are running Zoom on the same laptop that run the presentation, can Zoom detect the presentation screen ? This should be possible, thus greatly simplifying your setup since you only need 1 laptop.
For example I have a second monitor attached and in Zoom / Google Meet / Goto Meeting I can choose to share only that desktop display to the meeting participant.

So if I'm going to run Zoom and Presentation on the same laptop, it will be a problem as I need to actively click the slides to advance from the laptop. Which is why I would prefer to have a Zoom standalone.

I want to check if I can do a overlay of the Laptop A presentation ppt into a smaller top left corner in the zoom video which comes in as NDI.

I'm just slightly unsure of the equipments for this.

Actually this is what I want to achieve: https://youtu.be/p4U-1nNn4YI
Just that I need to know other than the capture device, how can I have a HDMI splitter that splits to the projector and to the capture device.

I assume i would need something like:

Laptop A -> HDMI Splitter - Projector
- Video Capture Device -> Laptop B

Not sure if this looks logical.
