Question / Help One GPU for gaming, one GPU for encoding?

Please forgive me if this is a stupid question, but if I were to get a gtx 1080 could I use it in an x16 slot along with my 980 hybrid? I'm not talking about SLI. I thought maybe if it were possible, the 1080 could do the gaming @ 4k and the 980 could be processing the encoding with NVENC. It seems feasible as long as the game has the GPU selected as 1080 and there's no SLI bridge.

There would be no benefit. NVENC has its own encoding hardware on the GPU; using it doesn't impact a card's rendering performance in a game, and you would be giving up whatever NVENC improvements the 1080 might offer.
