Question / Help OBS won't start up

I've run into an issue recently with the current version of OBS where I attempt to start the program but when I click the thumbnail nothing happens. OBS will show up in task manager but nothing shows in the system tray, no window opens and when I try to click either the thumbnail or taskbar icon it just tries to open another instance which also shows up in task manager but no window pops up.

Initially when this started happening I would end task in task manager and restart but now this solution has stopped working and I cannot open the program at all. I have attempted to uninstall and reinstall to no avail.

I've done some further investigation and I think I've isolated the issue. Problem is the issue seems to be ElGato Game Capture HD. Upon uninstalling that, OBS fired up perfectly. However without Game Capture I am seemingly unable to capture my PS4 Pro.

In order for OBS to recognize the ElGato, I must first power up Game Capture then connect the ElGato via USB. When Game Capture recognizes the capture card is connected I can then power on the PS4 and have Game Capture display the PS4 feed. I then shut down Game Capture, boot up OBS and the PS4 will be capturing perfectly.

It appears that literally any deviation from this precise process will result in a failure to capture the console feed both through Game Capture and/or through OBS and now I've run into this issue of Game Capture causing issues with starting up OBS. I've reinstalled both OBS and Game Capture so both are currently working as intended, for now.

If anyone has a solution to this issue besides "buy an AverMedia capture card" I'd be delighted to hear suggestions.

This is a known issue with the Elgato drivers. To help avoid triggering the bug, switch to an empty scene collection with just the Elgato active in a scene before exiting OBS.
