Question / Help OBS Update forgot settings

Hi,

I've been using OBS for years now. Accordingly I have quite a few configured Themes for different Games and other stuff.
The recent update from OBS 24 to OBS 25 has now deleted all Settings, Scenes, Profiles. Just everything I was greeted with the "Auto-Configuration Wizard".

More Specific Details:
I'm using:
- OBSPortable from https://portableapps.com/apps/music_video/obs-studio-portable (this allows me to easily copy/paste my settings to a new computer/reinstall windows)
- Windows 10 x64 Education
- Intel i5-4670K
- 32GB Ram
- nVidia GTX 1070 Ti
- enough Disk-Space.

I have already looked into the folder and all config files are gone/have been replaced with the defaults. Also all logfiles are gone, as those are also in the settings folder. (Maybe put those somewhere else, so an update doesn't delete those?)
Attached logfile is the first after the update.

Something very interesting though:
- All plugins are still there, even though they aren't loaded.

Any help is greatly appreciated

Greetings

Use the original OBS Studio distribution and no rebundled package. Since there has been quite some time from 25.0.4 release, and no massive reports of lost configurations in the forum, your loss is probably due to the portableapps bundling, not due to an issue with OBS itself.
You have also some strange errors in your log due to OBS being installed in some strange non-standard directory, with unknown (possibly negative) consequence.

My recommendation: uninstall and remove that portableapps thing and download+install the original OBS from https://obsproject.com/download

Hi,

the Version provided on portableapps.com is an official version by OBS and is published by the OBS-Team there. You can also see, that the update got there at the same time as here on obsproject.com. I just haven't noticed earlier, because I wait with updating application for usually 14 days (except for critical security vulnerbility patches).
25.0.4 has been around for 16 days. 16 days is not "quite some time". quite some time is more like a few months.

For several years now there were no issues with the portable version, why should it start now? But ok, I'll switch to the .zip version, add the portable_mode.txt myself and see how it goes.

as i am about to start a portable obs studio installation, largely because i have 2 different channels, so i want 2 different sets of sources, scenes, logins, streamkeys, etc.
this will be my first time using portable, but i have been using obs studio on a regular installation since it was released.
since it seams related to this thread...
when a new version of obs studio is released, do i update my portable installation by just copying the files from the new obs zip over the old obs files in my portable obs folder? will that leave all my settings alone? or will i have the same problem as the OP?

OK,

so updates on the ZIP version work using the integrated updater.
To actually have a portable version you need to add a file called "portable_mode.txt" in the root folder (where you can see bin, data, and obs-plugins)

I'm still investigating my issue, but it seems, that Windows Defender might be involved and at least partially responsible for the data loss

Greetings
