OBS Studio Display Shows Repeating OBS Interface - Not Monitor Display

I'm new to OBS Studio and trying to record a segment from an archived show on my monitor's display. Instead of the video showing on the monitor, all I see in in the OBS Studio viewer is a repeating image of the OBS Studio window. What setting(s) do I change in my video settings to replace the repeating image with the video from the streamed show?

Hi there, welcome...

I'm somewhat new'ish myself as well, but... maybe I can help.

So, first things first: I'm not fully sure what you're referring to by 'archived' but keep in mind that some streaming services apply DRM. Meaning that you might not be able to captures their output and instead will end up with a black window of nothingness. A quick way to test this is to try and make a screenshot (for example by using something as Irfanview).

Figured I'd mention, just in case.

So, you're seeing an "endless deep repeat" (as I like to call it); the mirror effect your screen gets repeated until it's a the size of a pixel?

Yah, that happens when you capture the screen capture ;) But no worries, it's easy to overcome.

The most obvious solution is to place the OBS window on another monitor. However, if I checked your output correctly then you don't have that. Don't worry, onto plan B ;)

First: when in doubt => create a new scene (the dock at the bottom left?). This will ensure that your current settings won't get disrupted. Just a precuation, not a necessity.

Here's the thing: OBS can use multiple input sources. My guess is that you set it up to capture your entire monitor, but this will also include the OBS window itself. Instead: add a new source by clicking the + icon at the bottom left corner of the "sources pane", then select: "Window capture". Create a new one (which is default) and then click Ok. Now you get to see the properties screen, here you can select which (currently open!) window OBS needs to capture. Select your replay window, click ok.

You should have set it up so that it'll only capture that one replay window, and if it isn't behind a DRM yuou could be able to capture it.

Hope this can help.

Well, your advice fixed the OBS issue, but your warning about DRM was equally on target. A family member was on a nationwide broadcast last night, and I'm trying to save it while I can still get to it.

Thanks very much for your help!
