OBS Studio causing whole computer to lag every few seconds BY JUST BEING OPEN

Alright so I'm a relatively new user and attempting to do some recordings. My roommate does a good amount of streaming and recommended the new Studio edition of OBS.
It flat out lags my computer not even while gaming or recording, on every setting I've tried. Low/High bitrates, I've put the settings from absolute shit recordings to lossless quality, same result both ways. The software itself is just lagging my computer to no content. Anyone have this issue? Or any suggestions. I can't seem to find anyone with the same issue.
To clarify, the main issue is my computer lags with just the Studio open NOT RECORDING on any settings (even defaults).
Specs: i7-4790k; 980ti; 8gb ram
