OBS Studio 32.1 Beta is now available for testing. Give it a try and send us your feedback!

This release comes with a long-awaited, and long-teased, update to Audio Mixer in OBS. Alongside a large cleanup on the backend, the audio mixer has been updated to follow more common paradigms that users have come to expect from their production tools. Easier access to monitoring, hidden sources, and better visual feedback on the state of an audio source.

Another major UI update comes to the Add Source dialog, which has replaced the clunky context menu with a proper dialog that makes it much easier and faster to find and add sources to your scenes, including a preview of existing sources to make it simple at-a-glance to find the ones you're looking for.

We have also added simulcast support for WebRTC, updated the number of actions that are supported by Undo/Redo, updated the transform dialog, plus tons of other various UI cleanups and fixes.

See the full list of changes below, and bug fixes at the full release notes.

To enable the beta version, either download from the GitHub link below, or on Windows/macOS go to Settings -> General and change the Update Channel to Betas / Release Candidates

I'm running it successfully now. Seems nice! Thanks all involved - I wish there was more in-depth about the new stuff though. The audio mixer font changed on the VU meter in audio mixer to a smaller one, and changed from 5dB increments to 6dB increments. not the end of the world! Oh- and some meters do not go grey when the source is muted, makes it a bit confusing during quick visual confirmation.

The source will no longer dim if it is unmuted OR has an active monitor output, because the source is still actively outputting audio.

I wished that there was a way to run OBS in a headerless mode like a VM. The Desktop Capture tanks some games like Cyberpunk when Ray Tracing is enabled. Or something like a headerless capture.

Hi @Fenrir

Would it be possible to change the default installation directory for DEB packages, as requested in the post below?

Hi @Fenrir

Would it be possible to change the default installation directory for DEB packages, as requested in the post below?

which causes problems with adding plugins, among other things
For the record, the recommended and supported plugin installation location for a linux system install is in the user config folder, at ~/.config/obs-studio/plugins, which wouldn't be affected by this.
I know a fair few developpers package into debs that install to the obs install folder, but they should be asked to repackage into something that uses the proper third-party plugins folder.

The source will no longer dim if it is unmuted OR has an active monitor output, because the source is still actively outputting audio.

Ok. I wish it was optional behavior. Common practice (common mixers) would include options for pre/post fader sends (to monitor device in this case). It appears that the monitoring level of a given source is affected by the fader, making it "post fader", but muting is confusingly pre-fader. Oh well, I can live with it. Cheers.

Hi @Penwy

Thank you for your feedback.

In my experience, I've noticed that some plugins don't function correctly when placed in user configuration directories, leading some developers to generate DEB packages.

In this scenario, I started also placing plugins not packaged as DEB in system directories and achieved greater stability.

Although I'm not a developer, I get the impression that changing the DEB packaging of OBS Studio would bring more benefits and be more practical.

Workaround for anyone who wishes to retain prior behavior of "if program audio/post fader is muted, fader is greyed out" is to use the Reorderable Audio Mixer plugin / dock. The re-orderability is really nice, the meters also revert to -5dB increments if that was your jam before.

My current workflow is that if I want to mute something pre fader I use a filter or i stop the source, and in those cases the fader remains lit, as expected.

The idea of changing this behavior somewhat baffles me, to be honest. I can see the new function as extremely confusing for new users, especially.
Another point is that ultimately, the audio mixer's job, visually at least, is to quickly present the user/operator with what the *audience* is hearing, or may soon hear if audio signal is presented to the fader. This is likely the case for a vast majority of users.
The new behavior implies that quick information about what is muted/unmuted is more important in regards to the technical side of a broadcast or recording, that the monitoring state of a source is more critical than the program/audience side of a production. This may be the case in some scenarios, for certain! But i do believe it to be rare.

Cheers and aloha <3
