Question / Help OBS recording stuttering / ingame fine

Hi,

on monday I switched from a R9 390X to a GTX 1080 TI - thats where my problems began.

First - the setup:

* Intel X5650 6-Core CPU @3,60GHz
* 16GB RAM
* 1080 TI
* ASUS Monitor (1440p)
* multiple hard disk drives (game and recording on different drives)

I only record, no streaming right now.

When using the R9 390X GPU I had the AMD Encoder configured - worked without any problem. Now that I have the GTX 1080 TI I switched to x264 and my problems began.

Right now I record Observer and PREY - Observer doesn´t seem to have much problems (except one FPS drop ingame) but PREY has a visible stuttering in the recorded video.

I tried to change to NVENC but the recorded videos were unwatchable (laggy for example).

Is my setup to slow for 1080p30fps recording? Would a capture card help? My girlfriend has a setup with Ryzen 5 1600, 16GB Ram, GTX 1060 and no suttering at all (Dead by Daylight and Hellblade for example).

The log excerpt shows 11,9% lost frames due to GPU overload (rendering is done by GPU, whereas encoding is done by CPU) and only 1.2% skipped frames due to CPU overload.

The OBS developers/supportes in this forum often say that some GPU headroom is recommended for rendering the OBS scene, so you want to avoid ~100% GPU load.
You might get such a high GPU load, if there is no VSYNC or FPS limit active, or maybe even with VSYNC/GSYNC when the Monitor is using a very high refreshrate.

Your could try to repeat the recording test, while having a 60fps Limit active (or Vsync and 60Hz Monitor refreshrate).

I capped the FPS in PREY to 60 and disabled opencl in x264 - seems to work pretty well, no missed frames at all. But is the GPU really to "slow" so that I have to reduce/fix the framerate ingame?

I will have a look at my todays recording - the last few tries were only about 1 Minute.
 
I just recorded 1h - seems to be quite okay, got some frame drops, don´t know if GPU related or OBS related/CPU related (didn´t have such drops before the GPU switch and recording profile switch). Are there any abnormalities in my new attached log?

Is it better for CPU Load to increase or decrease the recording bitrate? I´m quite confused after reading lots of articles :/ I also read that the nvenc doesn´t "support" low bitrates, is that correct?
 
NVENC is just a little less efficient, so with low bitrates, x264 will look a bit better. Higher Bitrate = more CPU load.
 
Ok. Today comes my new Ryzen 5 1600 - will overclock this CPU a little bit, I hope this will help for future recordings as the R5 quite a bit faster than my Xeon 5650..
 
The new system works quite nice :) But something is still funny - I´ve always about 4 to 19 dropped frames :D not more (0,0%) - can´t imagine where these come from, but its okay. The recordings are now stutter-free :)
