Same problem for me, whenever I try to stop recording, it just says, "Stopping recording." So annoying. I just want to make a video! I downloaded Obs this morning and tried to do stuff.

Wasted my time today with the same issue happening.
Using iMac 2013, with iPhone 8 as a camera source. Recording to .mov at 15000kbs bitrate.
I will try lowering settings and see if that helps, but ideally I would like to record at high quality...
The issue is intermittent, sometimes the files is created instantly, other times it just says "stopping recording" while the record timer keeps counting..even if I leave it for 20 mins, still doesn't finish the task and have to force quit. Doesn't seem to have any bearing on length of video either. Could be a few minutes or 20 mins and it does the same thing.

**Update, changing the file to MKV seems to be the fix.

UPDATE: it worked for a few hours, but then was back to the same issue. I restarted my computer (the computer wouldn't complete the restart, had to manually shut off power.) Upon restart was able to complete the recording. Clearly there is a bug somewhere

Hey all,

Hoping someone or the devs can shed light on this issue. Obs all of a sudden started playing up and it's caused me major issues. When you hit 'stop recording' it stays on 'stopping recording' and will not shift from that. the only way to 'stop' is to terminate OBS which of course then screws the file up. It will only save the first few minutes - I lost 4 hours of footage today. When you kill OBS - an OBS process still hangs around - and until you kill this second process; the video file will not 'write' to the hdd......when you check the file you may have a few minutes of footage - in some cases; the file doesn;t write at all.

I've now lost about 14 hours of recording to this issue and I really hope there is a fix or I'll need to find a new platform to record with - hope Devs can rectify this clear issue with OBS as it's an amazing program - but I need something reliable and won;t cause me the grief this has caused me (missed a video deadline and about to miss another now).

If there is any information you need then please ask - I have pasted a copy of the latest log below. I'll stress that my system has not been updated nor has it changed in the 3 days I've been experiencing this issue. Help me OBS Kenobi, you're my only hope. Log file attached.

I have tried a complete uninstall *reboot* reinstall - no joy. have tried running under a different profile; no joy. Tried running with admin privs; no joy. cleaned registry - no joy. tried on a virtual machine - worked for a bit; then started failing.

I'm experiencing the same, I clicked "Stop Recording" and it just didn't want to stop, so I killed the process in task manager, and it all got corrupted.

I'm having a problem that may have the same causes. OBS studio has been capturing the display and desktop sound reliably; but, it now has the "Stopping Recording" issue, not ever finishing even if left for hours on a 55 minute recording. If I stop it by clicking the button displaying the "Stopping Recording" message, it does stop. I'm using flv format and about 50% of the recording is included in the file captured.

Recently, I'd added the Virtual Cam plugin and setup a new scene for using it to provide a virtual background for various conferencing programs. This continues work properly, and so far, does a good job. I'm not sure if it is involved with the "Stopping Recording" failure or not.

I've tried rebooting; but, not uninstalling either the plugin or OBS. I decided to hold off based on seeing this thread and others where the problem was reported without any reference to the Virtual Cam plug in; and, saw no reports related to the plugin mentioning this problem.

I'm new to OBS. I've attached the log of the most recent attempt. I noticed one issue that appeared to be related to the audio capture:
10:37:53.799: [CoreAudio encoder]: Adding CoreAudio AAC encoder
10:37:53.803: Failed to load 'en-US' text for module: 'decklink-ouput-ui.dll'
10:37:54.072: [AMF] Unable to load 'amfrt64.dll', error code 126.
10:37:54.081: [AMF] AMF Test failed due to one or more errors.
10:37:54.082: Failed to initialize module 'enc-amf.dll'

After stopping the recording using the hotkey, there was apparantly another audio issue indicated
12:53:12.615: Device 'Speakers (3- Logitech USB Headset)' invalidated. Retrying

The portion of the recording that was made had proper sound.

So, not sure if any of htis is related to the "Stopping Recording" failure problem. Thought I'd report it in case it made sense to others more familiar with OBS Studio. Let me know any questions.

Carl

Discovered "Rich's Log Anayzer" tool. Showed my GPU was maxing out. Still not sure why this would have changed; but, will try fixes and retest.

I simplified my scenes by duplicating the original setup twice, then removing the one of the two existing ones in each, ending up with one scene collection for Display Capture and one for Virtual Background use. Also, lowered the video quality changing frames/sec from 60 to 30. Display capture now works normally. The log analyzer still reports critical issues with the GPU showing a renderling lag over 80%. Also, there is a 17.8% encoder overload meaning (I think) that my CPU is overloaded and dropping frames. Output seems acceptable for my purposes, however. And the "Stopping Recording" hang is gone. Will test running as an Administrator. New laptop coming in 2 weeks, that should solve these issues. But, I'm very happy with OBS and virtual cam again.

Hi mundyvlog, i'm also confused back then when i hit "stop recording" but the timer still go on. What i did is i just hit that button one more time so it stops recording (without have to kill the program).
1. Hit "stop recording". Now it should say "stopping recording"
2. Hit "stopping recording". Now it should say "stop recording"

I'm having the same issue. I just recorded a YouTube video and can't afford to lose the file.
My settings in output for videos are as follows:
Simple,
Quality: same as stream,
Format: MKV.
My video settings are:
1280 x 720,
1280 x 720,
Bicubic (sharpened scaling, 16 samples),
30 common FPS value.

Log of it happening again a week later: https://obsproject.com/logs/deY_2FAUTDPppU1W

I forced closed OBS with the Task manager. Then I loaded OBS back up, and cannot remux, I am forced to restart my computer to get the file to be able to remux. It is as if the .mkv files is still trying to record.
(This whole time I have had opened it as administrator)

I am switching from NVIDIA NVENC H.264 (new) -> x264 to see if that help with anything.

Problem: Mp4 recording does not stop when clicking "stop recording" button (whether main display stop button or output timer stop button).
Solution: When STARTING the MP4 recording, Left Click and HOLD the start button for at least 5 seconds (before releasing) to start the recording. For STOPPING the MP4 recording, Left Click and HOLD the stop button for at least 5 seconds before letting go.
Since I switched to starting/stopping recordings that way, I have had ZERO problems stopping the mp4 recording.
