Question / Help OBS freezes and not responding

Every time I load OBS and start recording/streaming it will freeze and become not responsive after 15 min or so of streaming. I thought at first it was the gpu but i have under clocked, went way back on drivers, went to early version of obs but nothing has worked. Also the game doesn't freeze just obs, the game runs fine. I have done everything I can think of but nothing has worked. I have been streaming for months and no problems why now? Also xplit works just uses all my cpu and I dont like it one bit.

Log file is attached

Thanks to anyone that can help

Try uninstalling Windows Update KB3176938.
It was added on 9/1/2016.

I've read that it helped one user fix his OBS problem, and I've been able to stream for a about 25 minutes without crashing, when it usually crashes anywhere from 5 to 15 minutes in.

Also, if it works for you, please do not forget to return here and report your results. Too many times a thread maker finds the answer to his problems and forgets to post about it, so others are still left in the dark

Hi,

I got the same problem : on some games, the stream or recording crashes on OBS, stuck on a frame in the preview, the clock still ticking, and the stuck on "Stopping recording/streaming...". Here is the log http://pastebin.com/QAGAq8i9, I'll try to unsinstall the update and come back with feedback !
Thanks !

Your log doesn't show a recording/streaming attempt. Please start recording/streaming, let it go for a few minutes, then try to stop recording/streaming, and then post the log.

Please keep in mind that you most likely cannot avoid KB3176938 forever. Microsoft will eventually try to force it, or its changes, onto your system, perhaps under a different name. If removing it fixed issues you were having, please report it to Microsoft so they can unbreak their patch.

This new windows update is absolutely terrible. If you WANT to try to reinstall it you might need to use Display Driver uninstaller to remove and re install GPU drivers. Also the new update can corrupt your current windows profile (which causes apps to freeze and input lag) Making a new windows sign on profile apparently fixes this issue. I am going to troubleshoot this myself in a couple hours.

Today KB3189866 was released which integrates KB3176938, but the good thing is, that it's working. So overall uninstall the deprecated Kb and install the new KB3189866 and everything is fine again.

I hope it helps, because during past 2 weeks a lot of people reporting freezing and this isn't OBS fault, MS simply changed something on D3d9 and DNS.

Maybe someone can make this thread 'sticky' because a lot of issue just because this old KB. it would help many peoples, or in general a thread which shows problematically KB's or software. And infos about current DX12/Vulkan status (which is not existent yet).

What Microsoft changed in the Anniversary Update was the way the OS allows applications to get data from webcams and other video capture/streaming devices. KB3176938 was released as a partial fix to the issues that the AU introduced, but it introduced more issues for people, seemingly related to DirectX capture/hooking. I don't think there were any DNS changes that affected how video capture or video devices worked.

I would love a temporary sticky for a post that mentions issues with the Anniversary Update or KB3176938. Heck, I'll offer to write it. However, I fear people would just skip straight past it much like we see for the current single sticky in this sub-forum about including logs with a request for support. It's been posted about quite a bit in the forums for at least the past week.
The Windows 10 Anniversary Update isn't causing issues with OBS Studio, it's causing issues with any kind of video capture device (webcams, game capture boxes, etc.). The change that's causing issues has to do with how Windows allows applications/processes to access data from video capture devices. The Anniversary Update introduced a breaking change to this process, and device drivers for most devices have not been updated to work with the new way Microsoft wants everyone to do it now.

This has been discussed quite a bit since the Anniversary Update was released in early August. Unfortunately, the options at the moment are:
  1. Wait until companies with products/drivers that don't work with the new Win10 update release fixed drivers.
  2. Wait until Microsoft releases patches to workaround the issues between Win10 and the drivers.
  3. Uninstall the Win10 Anniversary Update.
  4. Toggle a registry value to restore the functionality from before the Anniversary Update (also mentioned here).
I'm not sure that it's possible to implement a fix for this in OBS Studio. I mean, there is this, but this is all quite honestly a bit over my head. Someone more knowledgeable is welcome to correct me on any of this, or offer a better option.

I have updated to this and it does the same thing....

You have a separate issue, unless you're stuck in 2016 with pre-anniversary windows 10. Post a thread with your specific issue and make sure to include a log file.
