Question / Help OBS final recording has choppy parts

So I've posted about this before but my problem has come back. When i play games while recording, everything runs fine. However, when i watch the final recording, there are some parts in the video where it looks like the fps dropped. When i look in the corner, the fps stays at 60, but the preview and final video LOOK like its in 30. This happens randomly. The issue mostly happens when i recording pc games using obs. This never happens when i record on console through elgato. What fixed my issue before was that i played in full screen with vsync on and capped fps. However, now its not working. For other games it mostly works but currently im playing Resident Evil 2 Remake and the problem is back but only for this game.

Help me out, its making me want to strictly play and record on console only for smooth recordings

Please post a log of a session where you have the problem but game mode has been turned off.

  1. 11:48:56.266: Output 'adv_file_output': Number of lagged frames due to rendering lag/stalls: 127 (0.9%)
  2. 11:48:56.267: ==== Recording Stop ================================================
  3. 11:48:56.267: Video stopped, number of skipped frames due to encoding lag: 38/13936 (0.3%)

This doesn't seem too bad. You may want to look at capping your in-game framerate a bit to keep GPU load at or under 90-95%. The rendering lag frames above are caused by OBS needing to render a frame and being unable to because the GPU is busy; this causes repeated frames that appear as lag/stutter.

In OBS. If capturing at 1080p60 on the same machine leads to an amount of lag in the end result that is minimal, but unacceptable, you can increase quality and performance by choosing which is more important to you, frame size or frame rate, and prioritizing one over the other.

so i kept my obs settings but changed in game to be at least 900p 60 and it made a drastic change. Do you think my pc is too weak or i guess it really depends on the game. cause this issue really only happens to maybe 4 of my games.

actually i take that back its still the same lol. i didnt change the settings in obs and only in game, ill let you know if it helps or not when change it in game

alright so i did exactly as you said. but i have question, i set my base resolution to 900p, and output resolution to 900p and i got good results (playing game in 1080p). but i was told that i should keep my base resolution in obs the same as my native resolution which is 1080p. So when i switched it to that, i ran into the choppyness again. Apparently the downscaling that way is better than my way..whats your take?

I have this same stuttering problem in Metro Exodus. Other games seem fine. It's only when you look at the recorded video that you see the stutter and only in certain parts of the game (for me). The game itself is smooth as butter. It's an obs issue I think and I tried older versions. Same thing.Did you fix it?

Nope. still no fix. I really only get this issue when i record pc games. Using the elgato to record console games, my final footage is just as good as the actual raw gameplay. the issue has made me strictly record only on console through elgato.

I know. Same with me. I use to only record ps4 gameplay and never had issues. No dropped frames nothing because its not being played on the pc. But pc games... man that is another story. It's a shame though I really have a lot of pc games to play and I want to make videos but I can't if I get these stuttering issues. I been up for like 12 hours trying to fix it.

Bro. I feel the SAME way. I do lets plays too and I like everything perfect. Since I started doing pc gaming though, nothing but problems. It's so hard to make a good video with pc lol. I get so upset if something happens in the video. I was fixing things all week and finally I found a good set up and made everything work... until this stuttering problem in this 1 game. I cant upload more until I fix it!

yeah man. ive accepted the fact that even though my pc is a monster enough to play all the great games, its not monster enough to record me playing without any issues. everytime i felt like i found a fix, i would record and then i would see the dropped fps and im like whelp lol. if you do find a fix, feel free to come back here and lemme know haha

I will. But I don't know if my fix relates to the same issue as yours. But I will ... I'm very determined to fix it.
