Question / Help OBS drops over 60% FPS when not in windows focus

Hey OBS Team and helping hands,

Since two days I’m experiencing a problem while streaming that affects the quality of my stream drastically.

Whenever the OBS window (20.0.1 64bit) is not in windows focus I lose 2/3th of my FPS (from 60 to 17) and the CPU usage goes from over 85% down to 60%. I stream at 720p 60fps because of FPS games and in addition with an Eye tracker, so a fluent video is needed.

My setup is a Streaming PC:

- Processor: 2x Intel Xeon E5-2690 @ 2,9 Ghz

- CPU-Cooler: be quiet! Dark Rock 3

- Mainboard: ASUS Z9PE-D8 WS

- Ram: 32 GB G.Skill RipJAWS 1600 DDR3

- Windows 10 up to date

Bitrate: 5200

Keyframe: 2

Preset: slow

Profil: high

Processpriority: high

Normal (as it was before): https://clips.twitch.tv/UninterestedDirtyDolphinHassaanChop

Windows focus on OBS: https://clips.twitch.tv/ScarySmellyPuffinFreakinStinkin

I changed nothing at my setup, and no “newer” windows updates got installed. The streaming PC was turned on, and suddenly the problem appeared.

When I’m thinking about it, the eye tracker was also affected when OBS was in windows focus. So is it a windows “function”?

I would much appreciate you help in that matter, and I’m sure that I’m not the only one looking for a solution.

This one is also disabled. Thanks for the suggestions so far, but the problem still remains. Every time when the OBS windows loses Windows focus, it drops frames.

Try this https://i.imgur.com/7CVH7c5.png
Tbh i recently got rid of win10 on two pc's because of similar surprises and installed win8.1. Win7 is also nice but its "aero" component is a bit slower than this in 8.1
All enigmatic and mysterious stutters, hiccups and frame drops disappeared right away. I really consider win10 unusable pile of crap

This helped up to a certain point. I don’t lose 2/3th of my FPS now, it’s only more like 10-12 FPS that are missing while OBS window is not in Windows focus. So still no constant 60 FPS.

Don't use multi adapter compatibility hooking

Multi adapter compatibility is only enabled for the Tobii Streaming Gaze Overlay. I'm not sure if this will get rid of the entire problem. Or could you give me a better idea what you think the unhooking will fix!?

That mode of capture is EXTREMELY bad for performance and is VERY likely the issue.

As I said nothing got changed. So it worked with multi adapter compatibility for month, and it’s not the game capture, it’s simply to display where I’m looking ingame. Will test it nevertheless tomorrow unfortunately don’t have the time today.

Edit: Ok, I made some time and tested it! It appears that you are correct. I almost have constant 60FPS with no Windows focus on OBS, only sometimes it goes to 57 FPS for 2-5 seconds. The massive reduction of FPS that I’ve experienced must be a mixture of Windows Gamemode and the multi adapter compatibility! Noice! Thanks a lot guy’s @R1CH @Mroczny_Gustaw and you @Harold.

I’ll let you know if anything unexpected happens! Cheers.
