OBS doesn't recognize screens and windows

I have installed OBS and I can record videos using my camera. But I can't include the screen or a window as an input source. There are no properties for screen. [Gerät nicht angeschlossen oder nicht verfügbar] is displaed für screen. (not connected or not available). When I pick Window as source, there are only some items in the list which are no windows, such as [Window Server] Menue bar or [OBS] item0. I don't find the windows running on my screens. What can I do to include screens and windows as sources for recordings?

Yes, OBS doesn't see other desktops. So if you fire up something on one desktop, then switch over to OBS -- which seems like a nice way to organize things -- it can't see the windows on the other desktop. Make sure to run your target program and OBS in the same desktop.
