Question / Help OBS doesn't detect my Elgato Game Capture HD

I'm trying to run my capture card feed through OBS, but whenever I try to add it as a global source as a video capture device, the only option that shows up under devices is my webcam. Every time I find someone with a similar problem, it seems they were running the 64 bit version of OBS, which I know I'm not.

I know the capture card works, as it runs fine off its own software, and furthermore shows up under my computer's devices list as GameCapture HD.

I'm at a loss as to why I can't get OBS to detect my capture card. I've tried reinstalling OBS but it accomplished nothing.

Never had that problem.

Do you run OBS on a Windows system? Seems that Elgato doesn't work with OBS in OSX.
Do you have the Elgato Software open when you try to add it in OBS? (must have it closed)

Make sure no other program (especially elgato software) is running while you are trying to add it. If its running close it, restart OBS and try and readd.

Yes, my computer runs on Windows 7. You're saying OBS and Elgato don't work together when you're running windows?

Tried this and got nothing. Even restarted my computer, opened OBS first and tried adding it only to get the same results.

If you are saying you're running 32bit OBS and current drivers from Elgato then the only reason why OBS shouldn't see the capture card as a source is its being used.
do you have a logfile you can link?

Your logs did not mention Elgato at all.

Please try this:

Uninstall the Elgato Game Capture software
Reboot PC
Install the new Elgato Game Capture software

for now, remove the webcam capture then can you try and add the cap card with x264? Not that it should make a difference, just to baseline. Enable aero in windows, this needs to be done anyway.

I'm sorry, could you be more specific about what you mean when you say add the capture card in x264? And I enabled Aero, just as you said. Stil no results.

I tried following your instructions, but it made no difference.

I fear my log said nothing about Elgato for two reasons: 1, I've never run OBS with my Elgato because 2, I can't get the Elgato to show up on OBS. Also, about the log I posted. The picture dping posted showed him going to Help > Log Files > Upload current log files, but that was greyed out for me, so I uploaded the last one I had run. Do I need to be currently streaming to post a log file like the picture showed? I'm not sure if any of this will make a difference.

Thanks a lot for your dedication to getting this problem solved for me guys, even if we haven't found a solution yet.

Change to x264 instead of NVENC but that was just a shot in the dark tbh.

@LtRoyalShrimp wasn't there a tool a while back to analyze video input devices or do they have to show up to do that? it was like a directshow analyzer. @SpencoJFrog I honestly dont have a good answer for you, and you did check the site for the newest drivers?

I've downloaded the software for running my Elgato Game Capture HD, but I didn't find any drivers on the site. Maybe it's as simple as that?

I'll wait for the LT to reply...
Drivers come as part of the Elgato Game Capture install package.

What you can try is this:

  • Open Windows control panel
  • Go to uninstall a program
  • Find the Elgato HD or HD60 drivers, something like HD60 2.3.3.3
  • uninstall all Elgato device drivers as well as the Elgato Game Capture software
  • Reboot
  • Download and install again from http://www.elgato.com/gaming/download
  • Reboot
  • Open OBS, add video capture device

Please report back if this helps, or does not.

ok frog i managed to find a fix for this after smoking a half of pack of cigs
first of all, go to OBS main page, then when it promptes u to select the source download, click "windows" then "original" then u should see an "installer" or "zip file" now u need to download the "zip" file , once that has completed there will be two folders inside, you are going to want to open the one that says 32bit. once u have it open locate a file called OBS.exe and double click. now with that being done u can go ahead and download the software to run the elgato. once u get the LATEST software for your elgato finish the DL and then leave closed. now simply open OBS as i mentionned from the EXE located inside the 32bit folder then u should see the elgato hd pop up under devices, now the reason for this is because the elgato software ONLY runs in 32bit mode so it is universal within all windows 7/8 pc's, now the reason your obs wasnt picking it up before was because the obs version u were using was 64bit.. i sinceraly hope this helps u spenco

I second that, I tried everything, removing drivers, software, changing USB ports, switching to Xsplit, etc., and nothing worked until I did your steps in the exact order. you put them. I thought I was gonna be stuck with the GameCapture software forever (which isn;t BAD, it's just not OBS)! Many thanks man!!!
