Question / Help OBS Crashing

As far as we've been able to gather, this is caused by the AMD Spectre/Meltdown patches on Ryzen. Run Windows Update and make sure you have the latest, then visit AMD's website and also update your BIOS. So far, this has fixed it for most people.

If you own a supported AMD or Nvidia graphics card, you can also switch to the AMF or NVENC encoder instead, which will then use your graphics card for encoding.

For more details about the crash: AMD's patch seems to be crashing the x264 encoder, used to turn the OBS preview into an actual stream/file - it's not something that can be fixed in OBS directly.
 
Crash reports I've seen on here, including yours, and even on mine, point at unhandled exceptions with the x264 Windows DLL crashing when running under Ryzen CPUs. However, I'm not convinced this is entirely AMD Ryzen related. I can come up with Intel cases as well. This could very well be coming from x264 in the way of its own bugs so I keep an open mind.

It could be anything. Microcode problems, memory problems, bugs in x264 code, etc. That it happens randomly is tough to nail down.

That search returns all web pages that have the tokens "c000005" and "libx264.dll" posts since Ryzen has been released (the past year) and look carefully at the CPU being used.

After seeing this, I'm more leaning towards x264 having bugs.
