Question / Help OBS Crashes Skyrim

Before, I could use OBS to stream and record skyrim, but now, once I patched up, when I hook into the game using game capture, it freezes the game. If I hook into before I launch, it freezes on logo, and if I hook into it manually while the game is maximized, it freezes on the spot. It doesn't work for either windowed nor fullscreen.

Here's OBS's log for while it crashes.

Here is a log of OBS while the game was successfully being streamed through OBS.

Differences/oddities I spotted

Loading up D3D10 on Intel(R) HD Graphics 4600 (Adapter 1)

instead of the 870M and this

Trying to hook process: explorer.exe

Is popping up for some reason..

Anyhow, something seems to have gotten the Intel HD to prioritize itself above the 870M. The successful log has both adapter 1 and 2 as the 870, the crash one replaced adapter 1 with the Intel HD.

once I patched up

define 'patched up'

EDIT: also, your CLR plugin seems to be having more/different errors than I've seen before

I applied the latest patch to OBS, forgot to clarify that part.

I see.. I'm not really sure exactly what would be causing that. If it's any help, I do see [explorer] skyrim under the game capture, but it appears to do nothing.

I already have done that. I've stated I tried to do it manually via hotkey. The result is simply the game freezing.

Apologies, then, for giving redundant advice :p

Alright, seeing as you're equipped with a 870M, let's try to see if the NVENC encoder gives you any issues (assuming it's selectible)

You can also try Disabling Aero under the Video settings

Using Monitor Capture

and double-check your source types; I think this was one of the things that definitely needs Aero disabled

Past that, I'm kinda out of ideas and would suggest sitting tight, if you can, until someone with more experience hops on

Alright, so I have changed to NVENC encoder and have disabled aero. The only difference is that with disabling aero, it has a weird side effect where when I alt+tab, the window menu stays and does not go away unless I tab to the open skyrim (does exact same thing as it did before, freezes, then when I alt tab back in it does not maximize) and I use alt+f4 to close it.

As far as using monitor capture with disabling aero, however, it is a complete success, however, I have not used this option in the past for skyrim as the game frequently crashes (It's notorious for its instability) and am not 100% comfortable with everyone seeing everything underneath it. Although it's not the biggest concern for me (it's an inconvenience to say the least as I have to hide everything I don't want showing. My desktop, skype, etc. Getting it to stream is my biggest concern.)

I would prefer if we could get game capture working as intended to avoid any issues like this, but I understand if it's outside our limitations for a somewhat convenient solution.

I really do appreciate all of the help, and I will gladly use the monitor capture as a workaround until we can get everything functioning properly. Thank you :)

Yeah, I'll install Skyrim today and see if I can't get it working on my end and see what I've got my stuff set to

(and your welcome, m8)

Are you using ENB/SweetFX? Game Capture is incompatible with both, and will cause the game to freeze/crash.

Nope, completely fresh install. I believe I actually was using ENBSeries while it was working. I had done a fresh install strictly for speedruns, so it has to remain completely unmodded. Currently, both versions (modded/unmodded) have same results.

The other possible culprit, considering the symptoms you mentioned, would be some other program trying to hook into the game. Something like FRAPS or EVGA Precision/MSI afterburner. Anything that hooks into the game for any reason (usually to draw an overlay of some sort, like an FPS counter)

The only other thing that I believe could be hooking into it is livesplit, however I have attempted it without livesplit open with no luck. Looking through task manager processes, I don't see anything else that could potentially attempt to hook into it.

The issue might be related to what TehGuyz had mentioned about my intel card being prioritized on skyim itself. Perhaps I had posted an incorrect log file by mistake (a log from an attempted obsure solution involving explorer.). Here's a log with NVENC. http://pastebin.com/xUgaXGx2

I had actually set OBS to prioritize my 870M under the NVidia control panel as a possible solution as well.

I'm going to try to reinstall OBS in the mean time. If I don't post back it probably didn't work.

UPDATE: While re-installing OBS, I get the error message "Error opening file for writing: C:\Program files\OBS\plugins\GraphicsCapture\GraphicsCaptureHook64.dll". I appear to get this message every time I try to install it now. Ignoring it will finish installation, but I still have the issue. I uninstalled user settings and third party plugins as well just to be safe.

To clarify, I do not have an antivirus, nor do I have UAC turned on.
