OBS 27.2.4 colors faded and text blurred

I'm a fairly new user of OBS. I was running a version 26 and getting good results for screen recording. After updating to 27.2.4, I have only been able to capture pale and blurred versions of what's on on screen. I've seen a number of posting that refer to similar types of problems but nothing seems to match.
I'm running a 20.04 version version of Ubuntu on a reasonably capable laptop. (details are attached). I've also attached a sample of the recorded output versus the actual.

I can't help but feel I've overlooked something dreadfully basic but if anyone could shed any light on this I'd definitely appreciate the help.

I've upgrade my Ubuntu to 22.04 and OBS appears to have upgraded itself to 28.0.1. The result is still the same - recordings are possible but images are dimmed and distorted slightly.

Does anyone have a similar environment that is working?

Sure. The screenshots (Actual and Recorded) attached to the original post will show the difference between a screen view and a recorded session.

I'll have to apologize for maligning OBS.
I exported the OBS-produced video file to another system and it appears correctly.
I played the OBS-produced video file on this system with a video player other than VLC and it appears correctly.
I'll be following up with VLC and Ubuntu.
