Question / Help [NON-STREAM] Getting lags from my settings on some games

Hello

I sometimes get lags/image freezes on my OBS recordings while playing some CPU intensive games

I thought about lowering the quality "in game", but the lags / image freezes don't show up during the gameplay but only in the recording

What I mean is when I'm playing I don't notice any lags,, but when I open the video file (FLV or MP4 when converted) I get a big image freeze which makes me think the problem is with my OBS settings

here is a good example : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CHDfkTPwua0

although I have seen much worse

NOTE : These are video recordings, not streams. I save the FLV files, encode them to MP4 and then add effects with Adobe Premiere before uploading them to Youtube... the lags happen during the OBS recording not the other parts of the process

Here are my settings.

In the ENCODING tab :

Encoder : x264
Use CBR : No / Unchecked
Quality Balance : 10
Max Bitrate : 1000
Use Custom Buffer Size : Yes / Checked
Buffer Size : 0

In the VIDEO tab :

Adapter : NVIDIA GeForce GTX 970
Resolution : 1920x1080

In the ADVANCED tab :

Multithreaded Optimizations : YES / Checked
Process Priority Class : Normal
x264 CPU Preset : Ultrafast
Encoding Profile : High
Keyframe Interval : 0 / Auto
Use CFR : Yes / Checked
Custom x264 Encoder Settings : crf=20
(everything else is unchecked)

1. Where do you think my problems are coming from ?

2. Are there steps I can take to reduce these lags, such as slightly lowering the quality ?

The lags don't happen all the time but on some videos they are very prevalent and it can get annoying for the person watching it.

3. INCIDENTALLY, I record the videos in 1920x1080 but the final export (for Youtube) is 1280x720...

I used to record in 1280x720 but I figured the quality would be better in 1920x1080 since the image is scaled down.

Would this (recording in 1920x1080 over 1280x720) negatively affect performance ?

I also play every game in windowed mode, the window being generally around 1280x720 / 1280x800, but no larger than 1400x900 as I don't like windows taking up the whole screen.

Thanks a lot for your help !
