Question / Help Non Standart Resolution!

Good evening, guys! I would appreciate it if you could give me some advice. My display resolution is 1600x900. Should I leave the scaling filter in OBS the same, change it to 1280x720 or set it to 1920x1080? What value would be optimal for my resolution?

Depends on what you want to produce.
  • if you want to record, recording in your native resolution is best for quality (1600x900)
  • upscaling to 1920x1080 makes no sense, except your boss insists that you deliver a 1920x1080 video
  • downscaling to 1280x720 is recommended if you want to stream or if you PC doesn't has the computing power to encode a larger resolution

I'm going to stream, but I do not know what permission to put. Some say that it is necessary to leave the same extension what is in the scaling filter (that is 1600x900), others recommend putting 1280x720 (720p), and others talk about 1536x864. 1536x864 is 1.25 from 1600x900 as I understand it. Therefore i am confused : \

If your PC can handle streaming at 1600x900, go for it
But most people would use 1280x720, as that takes some load off the encoder, and can give better percieved quality at slightly lower bitrate required to maintain good quality on 1600x900

Thanks for your answers, guys. To be more specific, what settings do you think would be more optimal:

1600x900 - 30fps
1600x900 - 48fps or 60fps
1280x720 - 30fps
1280x720 - 48fps or 60fps

And I have two more questions:

1) Some people recommend based on the extension 1600x900 to put (not to lose much quality) the output extension 1536x864. This extension supposedly scaling with the formula 1.25 reduction. What do you think about it?

2) Does it make sense to put 48fps (50 or 59)? The picture becomes smoother, but people say that if there is a strong loading, the image will be worse than if I put 30 frames per second.

First off, what platform are you streaming to?

As far as 48fps being in the picture... don't. If your stream is going to be viewed on a computer monitor, 48fps is a jittery mess when played back on 60hz, and there's no good conversion (4:5 is the ratio, and that has a very jerky feel to it). Stick to either 30fps or 60fps.

For the resolution, that depends on what platform you're streaming to, and what's supported. If you're streaming to twitch, there's absolutely no limitation -- you can do 1600x900, 1536x864, 1280x720... all of those would work just fine. The difference you'll run into is in the encoder's ability to compress the frame, and that's where you just need to experiment. You might find that native 1600x900 looks best. Or you may find that the encoder can do a better job with 1280x720. Do test recordings and use your own judgment.

There's other questions to be answered when it comes to this though as well... such as what bitrate is available to you, what encoder you're able to use, what quality preset you're able to use, and whether the platform you're streaming to does transcoding.
