No video through capture device?

Hi all,

Completely new to OBS and not really sure where to start. I've got 2 USB 3.0 4k capture dongles and for testing purposes have them hooked up to 2 other windows desktops with 4k displays. I tested the dongles in VLC and can view the input correctly.

This is probably just user error, but its unclear how I'm supposed to get OBS to display the video from the capture devices. I can see them listed as sources in the interface, is there something I need to do to make the feed display on the main screen in OBS?

Please forgive my newbness.

You add a capture device as "video capture device" source to OBS. Make sure no other app is usimg the device (such as vlc), because it's a Windows limitation that only one thread of one app is able to get video data from a capture device at the same time.

Did that. Rebooted the computer just to be sure. Still nothing. Is there something I need to do to turn the sources on?

I'm aware this is a large screenshot(4k screen) but shouldn't I be seeing the signal in the black part?

Yes, you should see the video. Did you terminate any other app that is using these capture devices?
You can try to go to the properties of the video capture device sources and play with the video settings. May be you get a video if you explicitly set resolution and fps.

Yes I terminated VLC and then rebooted the computer. On the current boot no other app has used the capture devices.

I went into the properties and messed around a little, no change. I also tried plugging the capture dongles directly into the motherboard(before they were plugged into a USB adon card) still nothing. Is there any reason to believe that maybe my capture dongles just aren't compatible with OBS?
