Question / Help No sound through Bluetooth headphones when OBS starts

I have tried all settings, watched Youtube videos on fixing this but every time I start OBS of any version, the sound to my headphones stops even though the meter in OBS shows there is sound coming through to OBS.

This happens every time. I close OBS and sound is restored.

Any ideas would be appreciated.

Thanks

If your audio is muting when you launch OBS, and you're using a Bluetooth headset, it's caused by the underlying design of Bluetooth.

Bluetooth headsets typically have 2 modes, stereo audio (A2DP), and headset (HFP - Hands Free Profile). These two profiles have separate audio devices on the computer side.

When you have OBS set to activate a Bluetooth headset's microphone, that causes the headset to automatically switch to HFP mode, as A2DP is a lower priority. The reason your audio mutes is because it's still being sent to the A2DP device instead of the HFP device.

To fix this, you either switch to a wired headset, don't use the Bluetooth headset's mic, or set your sound to go through the HFP device for your headset.

Note: HFP offers lower sound quality.

I am having the same issue how do I either turn off the ability to use the Bluetooth headphone mic or get HFP to activate?

I don't believe you can. OBS asks Windows for the available audio devices, and Windows asks the device what its capabilities are. If the device can't handle simultaneous input and output, you might get one but not the other. Workaround is a wired headset.

The post made by harold gave me good information, I had this problem and I fixed it on windows 10 by going to bluetooth configuration and selecting in the bottom part of that window "Sound configuration". There my bluetooth headphones were listed twice, once as the headset + Microphone and again just as the headset. I removed the Headset + Microphone and leave just the headset and it works fine with OBJ. But I am not using microphone as I don't need it, I don't know if this will cause problems later with the microphone.

It works for me. I have poor music quality as mentioned above but it's perfect for Skype and recording the meetings.

This helped me too. My bluetooth headphones appear as both a headset and headphones in Windows 10. Now I know what the difference is. Thanks!

i have to open OBS before i connect my bluetooth headset with PC. This way works for me with good sound quality
i have found the the solution, just go to sound control panel in windows, in tab Recording just turn the microphone of the bluetooth headset off, then obs works perfectly

its very easy

Go to settings, audio, the first up, you change to your primary actually used Bluetooth Speaker, and change the twoest under this, aux an micro, to your primary Micro, this should unhappily a usb or latch, Otherwise its would not going

When you have OBS set to activate a Bluetooth headset's microphone, that causes the headset to automatically switch to HFP mode, as A2DP is a lower priority. The reason your audio mutes is because it's still being sent to the A2DP device instead of the HFP device.

Can you please elaborate on this, I'm confused?

I just want to understand why this is happening, even though there isn't a direct fix. So this is my interpretation of what you're trying to say. Please correct me if I am wrong:

When you have OBS set to activate a Bluetooth headset's microphone, that causes the Bluetooth headset to automatically switch to HFP mode, which means, now, the playback device ( Bluetooth headset ) is playing back the audio data that is coming to it through the HFP mode, not the A2DP mode. HOWEVER, since your computer is still transmitting the audio data to the playback device through the A2DP mode, and the playback device being told to playback the data coming through the HFP mode, there is a conflict - which is why you're not hearing anything because the playback device is set to playback the audio data that's coming through the HFP mode.

To resolve the conflict described above, you have to manually tell your computer to send the audio data to the HFP mode.

Can confirm this works, just disabling the Bluetooth headphone specific input device in sound settings makes me able to hear the sound through the bluetooth device again. And I'm still able to use the built-in microphone in Bluetooth headset as well.

Use your Bluetooth devices as an input device for obs i.e.
settings>Audio> under GlobalAudio devices >
set desktop Audio to your Bluetooth devices [like mine are Headphones (SYSKA- HSB 3000 Stereo]
do reply if this method didn't work out for you.

whoever will be reading this in the future...

I also have the sony WH-1000xm3 and got a new laptop today.

if you have windows 10 then
simply search for Sound Settings in taskbar
then click on Sound Control Panel on the right panel
you should see two WH-1000xm3 headset
then disable or disconnect or both disable and disconnect the WH-1000xm3 Hands-free AG audio

sound will instantly come back,

I don't why this is so hard for you guys to figure out, took me like 2 minutes to figure out.

You don't need to mess around with any settings inside OBS...

Just a note: if you want to resolve many of the issues with Bluetooth connected audio, you have two choices:
1. If you have a good onboard or standalone microphone, disable your Bluetooth HEADSET (oft. called "<Device name> Hans-free Audio") device TWICE.
It is listed as both "audio output" and "audio input" device in "Sound settings" -> "Sound devices management". Disable both.
2. If you don't have a mic, or you want to have ability to roam across the room and tolerate lower audio quality, you can disable Bluetooth HEADPHONE (oft. called "<Device name> Stereo"). Listed in "Audio output" devices only. Then your sound output will be handled by headset device with its Mic always ready to receive input without any switching.

The setting is persistent between reconnects, but is lost if you re-pair the device.
