Question / Help No Audio Coming from HDMI on Canon Vixia HFS20

I am brand new to this arena, but have learned a lot over the past few weeks.

I am trying to live stream to Facebook from my Canon VIXIA HFS20. Right now, I am connected to a Magewell XI100DUSB-HDMI USB capture device via hdmi from my Canon VIXIA HFS20. Then, I have this running directly into my computer's SS USB slot. On the camera, I am using a MAONO Lavalier Microphone with Omnidirectional Condenser, which is plugged into the camera's microphone 3.5mm entry.

According to this manual for the camera, I should be able to send stereo audio via HDMI, as it says, "You can enjoy 5.1ch surround sound playback on HDTVs compatible with 5.1ch surround sound connected to the camcorder using an HDMI cable. Audio output from the AV OUT/ terminal (including headphone output) will be converted to 2ch stereo. The camcorder's built-in speaker is monaural."

So, I have tried it two ways. First, through HDMI directly, where I get no audio. Then, I also tried using the AV OUT terminal with a 3.5mm male to male aux directly into my computer from the camera to no avail. I am happy with either, as long as it produces stereo sound.

I feel like I'm almost there, but I can use any help! I so much appreciate it.

What is your process to validate the audio is being captured by OBS?

Are you checking the mixer volume bars (green bars) in OBS to see if they're moving? By default, OBS will not output sound to your PC, though it will be captured and output to the stream/recording.

Also, in general, you should be using the settings in Settings -> Audio to enable/disable audio devices, rather than adding them as sources to your scenes.

Try enabling audio monitoring on the Magewell in OBS to see if anything is being output at all:

To use the Audio Monitoring feature, click Edit -> Advanced Audio Properties and set Audio Monitoring to either Monitor Only, or Monitor and Output. Monitor Only will not output that device's audio to your stream/recording. Audio for that device will be played out of your system default device, unless otherwise specified in Settings -> Advanced.

WOW! This was so helpful. It seems that I can get audio now. I tried to use a splitter, but it seems that even though I have two of those microphones with condensers, it will not work. So, I put one in the microphone jack of the computer and the other directly into the camera.

Do you have any suggestions to improve my audio? I am getting low levels through the computer input (especially) and through my camcorder. The camcorder levels are way up. Any suggestions appreciated.

I'm glad to hear that you now have audio. That means that maybe there is hope for me. I have the Canon XA-35 and unable to get audio for live streaming on Youtube and Facebook. I am able to get video and audio through the SIIG USB 2.0 HD Video Capture Slim Box recorded and saved to file. I know I'm just missing a simple setting or two.
