Newbie requiring help

Hi, just beginning to use a new cam I have bought (from China off Amazon). Camera, when plugged in USB to USB gets picked up and I can use it as a Webcam and it works fine in OBS.

It has a mini HDMI port as well and my laptop has a normal sized one. So I plug in HDMI to mini HDMI cable and, nothing. OBS can't pick it up.

Is there something I am missing. Should I not get a stream from the mini HDMI that should get picked up on my laptop (no other programme works for it either) or is this specifically for TV from camera (as I think it might be).

If the above is true then do I need a HDMI to USB converter and are they all suitable (did that search on Amazon, they seem quite cheap so was hopeful of just buying one and getting the same result as the youtube help vids from OBS.

The hdmi port in your laptop is for output only, it's for connecting an external monitor. It's not an input port for capturing video data.

You don't need any kind of extra hdmi capture device, since you already verified you are able to connect your camera with USB and get it into OBS like a webcam. Use your camera like this.
A hdmi capture device would do no different than what is already possible with the direct USB connection.

Thank you. The only problem in using the USB is that it sets up as webcam and I don't get a display on the camera, so I am reliant on filming via the laptop screen and I am hoping to do live filming of rugby and that might be difficult moving the camera and watching the laptop screen.

If I can get the feed on the camcorder screen as well then I can leave the laptop running (updating the score on it) and concentrate on the camera.

To do this I think I may have answered my own question, that I get a HDMI to USB adapter. Does that sound right.
