New M1 Pro - terrible lag when recording

SYSTEM MacBook Pro, M1 Pro chip, 32GB RAM running macOS 12.3.1

I am trying to do local recordings only - no streaming. I've enabled the hardware encoder for both record and stream targeting 1080p/29.97 at a 3500kbps rate (limited to 8000kbps).

The camera is a standard Logitech Brio.

The preview and recorded video are lagging and choppy. The apparent frame rate looks to be around 6 to 8fps.

What am I doing wrong?

OBS on my OLD Windows box was amazing.

I believe I've solved my own problem! I changed the frame rate from 29.97 to 30 and VOILA - smooth video.

I'm guessing the old technical reasons for drop-frame are no longer relevant. Time to update my thinking ... and habits, I guess
