Question / Help Native 720p or downscaled 1080p?

Hi guys,

Quick question(Because I'm a little too lazy to test and I'm at PAX East right now):

Which would provide better video quality when bit rate, and X264 preset stay the same, 720p native or 1080p downscaled to 720p using the 36x filter?

The video input would be from a PS4/Xbox One using a Xcapture-1.

Thanks for the info,

my native resolution is 1200x800. when i downscale it i get 1024x 640, but will it cut off things from my recording?

LtRoyalShrimp, encoding without a downscale will always deliver better quality and a truer image fidelity. When you downscale, text will get (VERY) blurred and difficult to read, even (especially) if it's crystal-clear on screen, and would be if you streamed at native res. Likewise, object edges can get fuzzed and textures can have problems, especially if they're fine-detail.

Short version, if you plan to stream at 720p and can deal with using 720p resolution on your end (many can't as it looks pretty poor when upscaled to fit a 1080p monitor), that's the better option. Cast at native resolution IF POSSIBLE for best results.

In theory downscaling from 1080 to 720 would give you an 'antialiasing' effect... but this isn't the case, it just makes text look like complete and usually almost-unreadable crap.

i play in 1080p and stream 720p and do NOT experience this "text looking like crap" issue so I am not sure what you're talking about.

Not resampling is always better than resampling, but some console games don't render at native resolution and resample internally anyway. If that's the case, then OBS will probably downscale better.
