Question / Help My camera stops working when switching scene etc

Hello,

As stated in the title: Whenever I switch scene or even if I preview my stream, stop it and then try preview again: My webcam stops working. It's still glowing as if it's on, but I cannot see my ugly face. I am able to resize it etc but I still don't see anything. The only way to get the camera working again is to restart OBS.

What I have done to try and fix this:
  • Tried both 32-bit and 64-bit version of OBS
  • Clicked the checkmark off and on again on the left side of the camera source
  • Added the camera both as a regular video capture device and as a global source
  • Installed software for my webcam and uninstalled the software for my previous webcam
  • Reinstalled OBS completely
  • Removed the camera from all scenes and added it again
  • Tried all these steps with Skype running and also not running

I have the Microsoft Lifecam HD-3000 and it works fine in Skype etc, but then I have this issue in OBS... Any suggestions?

Logfile from my OBS:

When you added it as a global source, did you both 1) remove the existing non-global source and 2) add the global source you created back to the scene? Two active sources using the same video capture device will conflict with each other.

Does it work in OBS Studio?

I removed the camera source completely from all scenes first and then added it as a new global source, but this still happens. I tried it again just now to be sure.

I have not tried OBS Studio yet, can I have them both installed at the same time or do I need to uninstall OBS prior to installing the studio version?

Yes, they can coexist on the same system, store settings in different locations, etc.
This actually seems to work! Looks a little different than I'm used to but I think I will get the hang of this! Anyway to import my scenes etc from regular OBS or should I just redo them?

No way to import scenes or settings from OBS1 to OBS Studio, no. On the bright side Studio is actually in development, whereas OBS1 development has ceased.

I figured it out and made a tutorial video.

You have to make your first scene, then duplicate it, remove all the unwanted sources, and then add the sources you want in the new scene, adjust sources as needed

If you adjust properties in one of the duplicated sources in one scene, it affects the properties of that source in all scenes. However, you scan scale the sources for each scene differently, as I demonstrate in the video.

Doing it this way will allow you to use a single webcam in more than one scene and have seamless transitions...in other words they wont black out and then reload.

In OBS Classic, you have to specifically create a source as Global.

OBS Studio (used in your video) creates sources as Global by default.

It was changed over in Studio to cut down on PEBKAC errors, and make it more newbie-friendly. You don't need to make a scene and dupe it over; the first time a source is used, unless otherwise specified during setup, it will be a Global and accessible in any other scene without transition delay so long as you use the preexisting entry from the sources list when adding a new one.
