Experiencing the same situation here, bumping to get more attention.
I use Windows 10 and OBS (64bit) 24.0.3, I am following every new OBS update with less than a couple day delay, and this problem started appearing few months ago so first I thought it's an update related issue, but Caliber's post is made in April.
The problem only appears when OBS is running. When it's not, mic volume will stay untouched.
There's no available info on the internet regarding this issue. And I can't stream because of this! My mic will be either too quiet or having too much background noise, and it will always be a voluntary viewer who can first tell the audio balance is bad, because there's literally no way I can spot the bad audio balance while doing a stream. I check my mic before starting the stream, and it will be adjusted to something awful mid-stream.
I tried ALL of these, that might happen to fix the problem in someone else's computer, none of them worked for me:
- Control Panel > Sound > Communications, 'When Windows detects communications activity: Do nothing.'
- Control Panel > Sound > Playback/Recording > every device > Advanced, two check boxes in 'Exclusive Mode' both turned off, one of them turned off, all of them turned on, followed by rebooting the computer, because checking one and not the other thing gave the mic volume staying for a couple more minutes and that gave me a hope.
- Device Manager > Uninstalling every device under 'Audio inputs and outputs' then rebooting. This solved the problem on a computer that uses a Realtek sound driver. The person said an updated driver for 'speakers' included in a Windows Update broke the mic volume in the way it's getting auto adjusted. But unfortunately I don't have the sound driver, nor that the issue resides in Windows the same way it does in this case.
- Checking other apps that might touch the mic:
- Skype: I uninstalled it.
- Steam - Friends - Settings - Voice - Show Advanced Settings - Automatic volume/gain control: It makes no change whether it's on or off.
- Discord - Settings - Voice & Video - Automatic Gain Control: It makes no change whether it's on or off.
I searched this forum from google and from the search page in this forum for other posts about the issue, and I can really find only
one post, but it didn't go well, is too old, and is archived anyway.
By the way changing the app volume for OBS will change the volume of a mic used in the app as well. I wonder it is somehow related to this issue.
