Muddied/Tinny output after recording/streaming while using APO EQ

I just got the Sennheiser HD 599's for Christmas and knew I was going to be in a world of hurt for being able to mix them well after only ever using direct connections with headphones (simply plugging them into a headphone jack). Out of the box, as expected they sounded rather poor but I quickly went on my way to try and find some free EQ software, and came up with Equalizer APO 1.2.1. As well as I went hunting for an amp/DAC, and settled on the FiiO K3, for now.

After many days tinkering with the settings for both the DAC and APO EQ, I have a sound that is, well, pretty good. But here's my issue.

Every time I make a recording or attempt to stream, the audio output is horribly muddy and empty sounding-much different from what I'm listening to in real-time. I've spent almost as much time trying to resolve this issue as I have toying with EQ, and the only solution that seemed to keep propping up was to disable sound enhancements on my audio output device, my 599's via the K3. But the problem with that is when disabling enhancements, my headphones sound like absolute trash.
Recordings and streams sound the same as the realtime audio, but the audio quality itself is just unacceptable.

I need to find a way to preserve audio quality throughout all my business while not disabling audio enhancements, as this renders all my attempts at reasonable audio to begin with null and void.

I have a feeling the next thing someone will tell me is to get an external mixer...
