Question / Help Mouse cursor is misaligned

Hey guys, I'm having an issue while trying to record a window capture. I am trying to make some tutorial videos for a website and OBS is not capturing the actual location of the mouse cursor. The problem gets more pronounced the farther the cursor is from the top left of the screen i.e. at the very top left the mouse position is recorded accurately while at the bottom right of the screen the cursor is off by a large amount.

Seems like it has something to do with capturing a different resolution for the mouse vs. the window but I have no clue how to fix it.

Any help would be appreciated!

I have heard of this before but have yet to determine the cause. Seems to only very rarely happen with certain conditions, but I have yet to figure out what specifically those conditions are to replicate it. I had others test out the same thing as well last time someone reported this and no one could replicate it. Could you make a video/vod of this?

Thanks for the reply. Here is a sample output video:

Firefox? I definitely can't replicate this. Does this only happen with firefox? Or your whole system?

I just used firefox for this video, most of my previous vids were off of chrome and had the same problem.

This is a bit of an old thread now but I think I may have found a solution while doing test recording on a new windows 8 machine today. After noticing the mouse offset, I further noticed that several websites that tested screen resolution told me that my screen resolution was not full 1080p (though windows insisted that it was). After a bit of looking around, it seems that the slider labeled "Change the size of all items" under Control Panel - Appearance and Personalization - Display had defaulted to the midpoint which corresponded with a 125% magnification. Putting the slider all the way to the left solved all my problems and also eliminated the visible text blurriness which I had noticed since I got my computer. Hope this helps someone!

I registered just to say I am having the same issue, and while Paperboat's solution worked, it also made everything on the screen so tiny it is unreadable, including in the final video. Using OBS without that scaling, the mouse cursor is about 20% off in the recorded video, meaning wherever I point on the screen, in the recorded video it is about 20% higher up the screen than where I was actually pointing.

I have to have the scaling all the way up as I am on a Surface Pro 2 and need the screen elements to be larger. I was hoping to use this software to record videos for a course I teach, but with the recorded position of the mouse misaligned like that, the software is sadly of no use to me.

This is a strange solution but perhaps it will work for someone else. I was having this problem while running dual monitors, on Windows 8.1, and the program that I was screen recording (bluestacks) was in windowed mode. After changing all the settings in OBS and nothing changing, I realized that when I moved the program I was recording around my screen the offset of the cursor also changed. So I moved the window of the program I was recording up into the top left hand corner of my monitor and the cursor aligned itself almost perfectly. Very strange but it seems like certain programs that force themselves into windowed mode and those that I put into windowed mode require this top left shift for the cursor to align itself.

I found a solution to this issue.

You must run OBS in compatability mode with "Disable display scaling on high DPI Settings" checked.

1. Right Click on OBS short cut and go to properties.

2. Go to Compatibility Tab

3. Under Settings Check "Disable display scaling on high DPI Settings"

Both of these options worked for me, thanks!!
The one posted by Mike works with any scaling of your text or screen, COOL!!
Thanks again!!

While the solutions posted here definitely helped (and I am very grateful for this thread), they solved the problem only imperfectly. Here is the solution I found, which 100% removed the misalignment problem and did not require the text on my computer to become microscopic:

Change your monitor's resolution to match the resolution at which you're playing the game. (On Windows, this means right clicking on the desktop, selecting "display settings," then selecting the appropriate resolution in the drop-down menu under "resolution.") Then, make sure OBS is recording with that same resolution. (Click Settings, then Video, then define the custom resolution.)

In my case, the issue was with Pillars of Eternity. I set the resolution of the game to 1600:900, then changed the resolution of my screen to 1600:900, then entered "1600" and "900" in the custom resolution boxes in the Video section of Settings in OBS. After that the in-game cursor aligned perfectly.
