Monitor, base (canvas) and output (scaled) resolution. Low performance?

Hello,
I have a 2K monitor, but I set the base (canvas) resolution to 1080p. Is it absolutely necessary to set the resolution in 2K?
Can streaming performance and quality improve if resolutions match?
