I downloaded the latest release of the multiplatform Windows version and when I try both 32-bit and 64-bit I get an error that says it cannot find locale/en-US.ini and then it closes.

Same problem, and I agree with above. Posting the solution would be great for anyone else that looks it up.

Do you have en-US.ini in your .\data\obs-studio\locale folder? It should be 14,412 bytes. If you don't, go reinstall OBS.

@Sapiens I don't think the file is in the zip download at all. Seems it is missing. I can take a look and let you know.

Just checked and it is. It does in fact say it's missing and does do a force closes when I go to settings though.

Edit again. Nevermind it's working now. I think something else was casuing the issue. When a new release comes out I just copy over the folder that it's in. This time I didn't. I don't see any issues now.

So for everyone with this problem:
Check that the file en.txt exists and has a filesize above 0bytes. If the problem persists, extract this single file a second time, or extract the whole OBS-MP.zip to a secondary folder and try starting it from there.

I think the link was temporarily broken or something? There was only a bin folder in the first zip file I downloaded, now there is a data and plugins folder. Explains why it didn't work lol :P

Hmm, Github was (or still is) being attacked (ddos) for a few days now, that can always lead to temporary download problems I guess. Thanks for reporting back!

In fact, it was reportedly lost and the electricity turned off when I went to the setup. Edit again Remember it works. I think something solves the problem. When the new version appeared, I copied the folder there. This time I didn’t. I don't see a problem now

Hi guys, if you recently installed "camtwist" then this is your answer' manually remove : /Library/CoreMediaIO/Plug-Ins/DAL . Then move the plugins from the DAL folder to the trash and OBS will start again. So it seems that OBS 23.2.1 doesn't work well with those plugins in that directory... the plugins are v3.4.3 and are for Mac osx 10.10 or later..

I need some help. When i click on my OBS studio app it flashes for a split second and leaves my taskbar. When i click it again it says OBS is already running when it really isnt. After a few seconds i usually get the "failed to find local..." thing. I tried uninstalling OBS and reinstalling it and it doesnt seem to work. It seemed to happen when i added a plugin. im on windows 10 btw. Please help. im trying to stream on my YouTube channel tonight. Its really annoying. Im pretty sure i deleted the plugin file i installed. it was an advanced scene switcher or something

when I try to open in OBS Studio a video that I created with OBS Studio just a few minutes earlier, I get this same pop-up window "failed to find locale/en-US.ini ". What should I do?

What worked for me is going into task manager by right clicking the taskbar and closing OBS that way. If this doesnt work then youll have to uninstall OBS and try again

This occurs when you run obs64.exe outside of its working directory. Use the shortcut or set the working directory manually.

Win 7 Pro
Have the same issue - it occurs when I Show Recordings and click on an .mkv file. Two sequential msgs:
1. Failed to find locale/en-US.ini
2. Failed to load locale

I have tried starting OBS from a .BAT fie per other suggestions on this forum, changing into the folder. I have also tried opening the folder C:\Program Files\obs-studio\bin\64bit\ in Windows Explorer and running obs64.exe from there. Issue not resolved. I can change the recording format to .MP$ and those recordings run fine. I did a system-wide search and turned up 23 instances if the .ini file within the OBS install folder.

It sounds like you associated MKV files with OBS. This will not work, OBS is not an player / editor and cannot handle file associations. If you want to play back MKV files, I suggest associating them with VLC.
