Question / Help Microphone stops working mid-stream/record

Hi

I seem to be having an issue with my microphone stop working mid stream. I have a Rode NT-USB microphone using OBS Studio 25.0.4 (64 Bit, Windows 10). I have disabled all recording sources other than the Rode within windows but it still happens. I would start off speaking but mid stream/record it would mute? Now by mute i mean no sound going into OBS and no activity on the mixer but i haven't actually muted it myself.

Log in question.

I have noticed on the log it seems to be terminating the microphone twice when closing the application down?

Any help would much be appreciated.

Do you have your Rode selected as a mic in your OBS settings, as well as included as a source within your scene? If so, only do it one way or the other.

Windows things to check
- Windows Settings -> Privacy -> Microphone. Verify "Allow apps to access your microphone" is on, and OBS is enabled in the app list.
- Windows Settings -> System -> Sound -> Sound Control Panel. Recording tab, double-click on your Rode NT-USB, go to the Advanced tab, and uncheck "Allow applications to take exclusive control of this device"

What do you mean by this? Surely you would need it on both the source (Mic/Aux) and within the OBS settings of Audio - Mic/Auxilary Audio?

These settings are already enabled.

No, just one. Adding a microphone source in the audio settings will add that device for every scene you have in OBS. It will not show in the sources, bit it will show in the mixer, with full ability to add filters and control via the advanced sound options.

The other way is by adding the microphone as an audio input source within the specific scene you want to use. This will only add it within that scene, which allows you to have different audio devices active depending on which scene you are selected to.

I have deleted the source so that the obs settings is the only thing that has the mic. Thought that fixed it back since dropped off. If i disable the mic in windows and re-enable it, it will start working again?

Sorry i wasn't clear. I have deleted the source and left it only in OBS settings like you said and the issue is still happening. Think maybe its more of a windows issue as i have to reconnect the mic physically or disable/enable it in the Audio Devices in windows Sound Settings. I have reinstalled the Mic and moved it to the next USB 3.0 port but issue reoccurs. Not sure what to do next really.

Although I do use OBS (for recording, not streaming), I also have this issue in other programs. I have the NT-USB, and even in Zoom or browser-based video chat, it just stops working while I am speaking.

Come to think of it, I've never experienced it in OBS although that could be coincidence.

Win10 (not my OS of choice but I don't have a choice at work) is set to turn off USB ports by default in the power settings. Don't ask me why. I think it's just a momentary thing and you might not notice it with a mouse, but the mics, it seems they don't always come back on.

Have tried the solutions but as yet unsure if it's successful. Will report back later.

The video has some f-bombs (in case you're at work).

any update on this issue?

I am having the same issue. i have tried drivers, obs settings, and windows settings. i have used 3rd party apps, close all 3rd party apps. I use to stream on a laptop and have since built a gaming PC and i never had this issue on my laptop. This issue happens with multiple audio input so i am quite happy its not a Hardware issue. My next step is to uninstall obs and reinstall it.

I had this issue last night and ended stream, about 15 min later i had done nothing and mic was working again. i to have to disable input mic and then enable again to get this to work.

Any feedback on this would be great?

For those still encountering this issue, I found a solution that may work for you.

Go to your settings and check to see if your streaming output is set to Hardware (NVENC) or Software (x264).
Mine was set to Hardware, and the problem ceased happening when I switched the streaming encoder to Software instead.

My hypothesis is that depending on your computer's GPU, playing any game that either taxes the GPU, or both the CPU/GPU together enough will cause a hiccup with how OBS recieves mic inputs. Either way, switching it so the encoder works purely off the CPU worked for me and might for you.
