Question / Help Microphone hiss only in OBS

Hello I have a HP spectre xt ultrabook which has a mic/audio jack in one IE you can use iphone/samsung galaxy headsets and use the mic for skype or whatever. When I record in Audacity my microphone is fine, but when I try and record to a local file in OBS I'm getting considerable background noise/hiss. I've tried two different headsets and a senheiser (sp) usb sound card with an external mic i found and all have the same problem only in OBS.

Any ideas on how to resolve this?

Just to check, go into settings, then to audio. Make sure that your mic inputs are not being boosted, you may have played with it and forgot, or if your new to OBS, its possible you messed with it, without fully knowing what you were doing (I do that all the time, mess with settings, only to realize i broke something lol) if you have them above 1 that could be where the hissing it coming from.

Hi, thanks for replying. Both are set to the default 1, I haven't touched any settings that I'm aware of that would be causing this.

Hi Jack0r, thanks for replying.

I've made the modifications as suggested but there's still a considerable amount of hiss in OBS. I found a guide on Youtube which I think has been linked in these forums too which was using adobe audition and some virtual audio cable, but then I get some strange echo no matter what I set the delay at both ends. Should I just go out and buy a new headset on Monday?

Well I've just ran through the adobe audition steps again and I don't have the echo! I'll take a nap leave this laptop on then let you know how I get on with a local recording.

Hmm, ok the echo is still there just when I speak louder (I was whispering into the mic cos my GF was asleep, lol) any ideas how to get rid of the echo? Thanks!

Sry, was a bit busy and missed this thread. Can you tell me how exactly you setup Audition? Similar to our ressource guide or my video? (

I found a different video but yours is actually better regarding the latency. I didn't know you could enter a minus. I've just followed your video through and I'm still getting echo however :(

Here's my settings:
