Question / Help Mic Issues In Certain Windows

Okay, so here is something very interesting which is REALLY throwing me off. No one else, according to Google, has ever had this issue, so I am hoping someone can help me out here.

So my mic works great with OBS ... as long as I have my desktop or OBS selected. The moment I select my game, no mic. No bar movement, nada. I figured something with my game was screwing up, but it is other items also. So ... I can select a file explorer window for windows files ... mic works fine. But if I select my chrome browser ... no mic.

The sad thing is, without changing ANY settings at all, I was streaming, with vboice in my game, perfectly 2 days prior. Yesterday I go to stream and this started happening. I have been the past 24 hours solid trying to figure this out and the ONLY mic issues anyone else besides me has ever had were completely failed mics or incorrect setups. Either way, in everyone else's case, it was either mic worked or mic didn't work. In MY case however, the mic only doesn;t work in the windows I NEED it to work.

My setup:

Voicemeeter to feed game sounds only to OBS - currently only my games feed through Voicemeeter
OBS Settings:
  • Desktop Audio Device: Speakers (VB-Audio VoiceMeeter VAIO)
  • Microphone/Auxiliary: Microphone (Plantronics GameCom 780/788)
  • Push to talk: Yes, activated by my mouse "Back" button.
Now ... with item 3: Push to talk ... here is where the dilemma starts against a solution: If I turn P2T off, then the mic works no matter what window I have selected. however, I cannot have this because I have a lot of background fan noise, etc. here, and my mic is really sensitive (cannot be adjusted, before someone suggests it). So for a professional stream, P2T is an absolute must. I almost wish VoiceMeeter had a Push-to-Talk function, or I'd just use that, but no joy there.

Any ideas?

EDIT: I forgot to mention - I recently upgraded from Windows 7 to Windows 10. Not sure if that is even important or not.

Following up ... on a whim I did decide to try to put my voice through VoiceMeeter as well, and also tried to eliminate VoiceMeeter completely from the setup. In both cases, the result is the same as above. As long as I have no windows selected, I have a working mic with Push-to-Talk. But the moment I click on Google Chrome or into my game ... no Mic again.

I wish I knew wtf changed over the past 24 hours or so to suddenly make my computer think that I can;t communicate with OBS when i am in the very windows where I actually NEED to communicate with OBS. Yes, I also tried rebooting my computer. This did not help.

SOLUTION FOUND:

In Windows 10, if you have ANY application running as Administrator, then OBS cannot record a microphone while you are clicked into that application. My Chrome, and my game, are both running as Admin. So I tested this out on a few other windows that are not Admin - they worked just fine.

SOLUTION: Make sure OBS is set to run as Administrator. Then, and ONLY then, can you record with a microphone while those windows are selected.

I did not have this issue in Windows 7. Yet another good one by Microsoft LOL.

Since no one else before me has had this issue, I am leaving this thread up in case someone else runs into this issue. I hope it helps someone out there.

About WIN10 upgrade/update, we recommend to re-install VB-CABLE and Voicemeeter after WIN10 upgrade (don't forget to REBOOT after de-installation / REBOOT after installation). In all cases we recommend to re-check your audio configuration (re-select audio device in Voicemeeter an other applications using audio device)...

About possible automatic microphone muting, we recommend to check the communication option in Windows Control Panel / Sound Dialog Box... set to 'Do Nothing" . In some cases, using VOIP or Communication APP can mute all other recording devices not directly connected to the communication application.
