Question / Help Mic Crackling in OBS

Most recent log file: https://gist.github.com/anonymous/1900f5e4b0460cd15344db02fa25ff49 (also contains an odd explorer.exe error)

Recent video where this is present: https://youtu.be/inXoyDF0sVg

Only started happening a couple days ago, audio seems to peak out and crackle now certain points. (2:43 in the linked video is one example). Can also be found in videos of mine from the last few days, but I don't have timestamps.

It doesn't appear to be just the mic itself, but something with recording via OBS as no crackle is present in Skype, Discord, etc.

Any help would be greatly appreciated!

Sounds like a typical distortion when the audio signal goes beyond 0dB. Did you try lowering the mic gain? As far as I know Skype and Discord are by default reducing the signal automatically. You can also try a recording with Audacity and look if it peaks out there as well.

Going to trying setting a -db modifier on OBS. It's really quite baffling, I've done a few tests where I'm practically shouting into my mic at max volume, rapidly or slowly modulating volumes up and down, etc., but I can't seem to get to happen on command. It'll sound blown out, muffled, overly-bassy, etc., but not crackle. It's really just bizarre.

Fast video card by the way. You can use NVENC (Comparison of x264, NVENC, Quicksync, VCE) too.

The only issue I see is:

13:18:28.220: Device 'Microphone (Yeti Stereo Microphone)' invalidated. Retrying

but it happens outside the recording by the timestamp...

The explorer.exe is blacklisted application. It's not a error, just warning. Try 'Window Capture' or 'Display Capture' if you want to capture explorer.

You don't need WaveOut anymore for 'Video Capture Device' source (there is new Audio Monitoring feature under the main menu Edit>Advanced Audio Properties, monitoring output device under the Settings>Advanced).

Do you hear the "crackles" by any player/browser?

The crackle was definitely part of the recording, shows up in all methods of viewing the video, as far as I can tell (and from multiple people reporting it to me).

I'm not trying to capture explorer, which is why I'm bit confused what's causing that to show up in the log. I'm generally doing the 'capture foreground window with hotkey' to grab whatever game I'm recording at the time. Could be after I close the game, but before I close OBS that it's just trying to capture whatever's leftover (i.e. nothing).

Your note about the Audio Monitoring might actually resolve a separate issue I was running into with the Elgato, so thank you for that as well!

So it was solved for a couple days, but the crackling is back now, once again I'm baffled as to what it could be. Even at the 'highs' there's no reason the audio should be clipping and when I do tests of purposely high volume, I can't seem to replicate it.

Any help would be appreciated. For further information, here's the video recorded during the uploaded log file where the crackling occurs, starts right at the beginning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RadrKltOe-U
