So I tried just doing a screen capture of the el gato software but its WAY too slow. Is there any way to make the mac recognize the el gato and not have to screen capture it?

Nope. Contact Elgato and ask them for Mac drivers that provide a video source that OBS Studio-Mac can capture. Or bootcamp over to Windows.
