Question / Help Low Ping when alt+tab into game (Garry's Mod)

When streaming with OBS and I first get into a game I have low ping for around 1 minute then it suddenly jumps up. If I alt+tab out then back into the game my ping goes low for another minute then reaches the 500+ ms range. I really have no idea as to why this would happen and I am hoping for some answers.

In the recording when the ingame capture stops I was alt+tabbed then when I tab back in you can watch the ping lower to around 30ms though not shown is about 45 seconds later it goes back to around 500+ ping. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

If you have ping issues that you think may be caused by streaming I would probably recommend using "minimize network impact" in broadcast settings, though if that fails you may just be using too much bitrate and you need to lower it to leave more room for your game.

I have tried the aforementioned "minimize network impact" option though it doesn't seem to affect much. I am more wondering why my ping in game would lower upon returning to it then raise suddenly again as the amount of bandwidth being used should not change from my understanding. My bitrate is already set quite low at 1k and resolution set to 480p if that helps troubleshooting at all. If it is more helpful I can record in more detail the issue if it helps.

I am more wondering why my ping

Could you use the console command net_graph 1 to show your ping instead of the showscore panel?


also, are you streaming CBR or VBR?
if VBR then its normal when you alt-tab the picture is fix and not that much bandwith will be in use, but when you return to the game the picture move and OBS will use a bigger bitrate.

I also do have my CBR enabled though as seen in the stream I very clearly have no lag issues for around 3-4 minutes but suddenly it goes up for no explained reason. Hopefully this will be more helpful and please let me know if there is more information I can provide to troubleshoot this problem.
