I was noticing that my mic volume seemed low when streaming even though I've got it gain staged pretty well when I'm recording podcasts or doing local recordings with shadowplay. As a result I decided to do a comparison that involved recording with OBS and Reaper at the same time and merging the waveforms in premiere pro so that I could see the differences in gain. And from the tests it looks like I'm getting between 6-10dB less gain in OBS than I do in any other recording program.
Using a mic boost of 2 in OBS instead of the default 1 gives me gain that is only 1 or 2dB off of what it should be. Is this working as intended (presumably to prevent as many streamers from peaking as often as they do)?
This is a screenshot showing a side by side comparison of the waveforms (I made some loud sounds to peak on purpose so you can see the difference in peaks) :
top waveform is OBS audio (mic boost 1), bottom waveform is reaper
