Question / Help Low FPS when using OBS monitor capture but not game capture

I'm pretty new to streaming so my knowledge about it all is rather limited. I tried streaming a game tonight and was able to get 720p 60fps easy. However, if I try to stream just my plain desktop using the monitor capture through OBS, I get 30fps that usually drops to 20fps within a minute. Is there something I am missing or doing wrong? Any advice is greatly appreciated.

Monitor capture on windows 7 is the slowest/worst capture method sadly. Make sure you have disabled aero since that usually makes it even worse, but even without aero on monitor capture will stay the worst. So yea its pretty much normal that window capture (this time with aero ON) and gamecapture (aero doesnt matter here) are far superior, at least on win7.

Depending on your PC specs it might even stay this bad without aero though.

So without an external capture software, I can only use OBS to stream in game?

Why is everyone saying Monitor Capture is terrible? Am I the only one that streams with JUST Monitor Capture?

It's terrible because it is BY FAR the slowest capture method in Windows 7. It just is. Game Capture and Window Capture with Aero enabled are far far better performance.

Don't you have some overclocked socket 2011 CPU or something? Not everyone has a rig like that, so every bit of performance counts.

Yea i didnt mean to say that its UNUSABLE, with aero off its decent~ish with a powerful CPU. I just can talk about my experience with my old amd x6 at 3,8ghz and with that monitor capture was semi-terrible compared to gamecapture (7850DD as GPU). Never got a chance to test it with my new intel i7 2700K but im pretty sure with such a CPU it would be fine.
Gamecapture uses the gpu instead so if you max out your gpu with the game alone it wont perform as well, you might want to try and limit your ingame fps (vsync or other means to limit it). That SHOULD be the only reason that gamecapture would perform worse in your case.

@OP: To capture your desktop monitor capture is totally fine in any case. You could always create 2 scenes and toggle between them with hotkeys or the simple scene switcher plugin in the plugin section of the forum. 1 scene with gamecapture for ingame and one for the desktop (many league of legends people do that to capture the lobby which is seperate from ingame).
