Question / Help Loud clicking noises in recording/stream that are not in game

Loud clicking/screeching noises appear in my recordings/streams every 20 seconds or so. I'm only recording game sound (no mic) and I don't hear the noises when playing the game, only when watching the recording back.
The noises are most frequent/apparent when recording audio from the Snes9x emulator, and even then it varies greatly depending on the game.
I've experimented with all the possible audio settings in OBS and in Snes9x - the only thing that seems to prevent it is setting the audio bitrate to 192 or higher in OBS, however I previously had to lower it from 192 to 96 to prevent issues with my mic (the pitch went down at random moments until I plugged the mic back in)!

Any tips on how to prevent these glitchy noises are highly welcome. I'd have a serious problem if I couldn't get OBS to record Snes9x sound properly.

OBS settings:
- encoder: x264
- rate control: CBR
- bitrate: 2400
- audio bitrate: 96
- sample rate: 44.1khz
- 'disable Windows audio ducking' is checked

Snes9x settings:
- playback rate: 32KHz
- buffer length: 64ms
- '16-bit sound' is checked
- 'stereo' is checked
- 'sync sound' not checked
- sound driver: XAudio2
- input rate: 31900
