When I add the Avermedia Live Gamer HD (c985) all it has is a black screen. Editing position/size does nothing and I'm not sure what to do...

I know for sure that the Live Gamer HD works with OBS, a good number of people use it. Make it's not in use in some other application, that you don't have any DirectShow image filters or anything like that installed that might interfere with it, and also try using the 32-bit version of OBS if you're currently using the 64-bit one, as it may help in cases where the 64-bit driver isn't working properly because of one reason or another.
