Question / Help Lag and Frame Skip+Drop

I apologize if this was asked before. I have searched the internet far and wide from youtube videos to forums and cannot seem to find a proper fix. When I first installed OBS, I was able to run any game without any issue. I recorded on my HDD. I've bought a external terabyte SATA drive to see if the HDD was the issue, but I am still getting the lag problem. My games run wonderfully except when I start to record. Everything is reset back to default (settings wise) and I use the basic settings over the advanced. I AM NOT STREAMING WHILE I RECORD!

Some extra information regarding my specs :

My computer is pretty tough so it should be able to handle some quality graphics. I've set the video to the 2nd best quality (for output). The graphics are okay, it's the speed at which everything records is the issue. Sometimes it will run smooth, but then it will go slow and I'll lose frames.

Any help or recommendations would be extremely usefu (i.e what the settings should be).

Thank you for your time.
