it sounds like my monitor is being run through a noise gate?

Or maybe some sort of noise suppression. It only started yesterday, but after I set up my Elgato capture card, I noticed my audio monitoring was cutting out during some ambient noise and at the start of my sound effect redeems on Twitch. The actual recordings/streams sound fine, pretty sure it's just the monitoring, so the problem isn't an emergency, but it's driving me nuts. And it's been happening on multiple audio sources, so I don't know where a noise gate/suppression filter would be. Any ideas?
