Question / Help Issue with ZOOM Q4 Camera

I am having trouble getting my camera to work in OBS. When I add my ZOOM Q4 as a video source it is just black. It doesn't even have a red select border and resize handles -- it's like there is nothing there at all. Other cameras work in OBS fine, and the Q4 works without issue in VLC and Skype. Tried on 3 different computers all running Windows 8 or 10, OBS Studio versions 17.01 and 17.02. I tried with and without installing the Q4 webcam specific drivers.

Okay, so now what do I try? XD

Additionally, I know that OBS is "talking" to the camera. When I run OBS and enable the video source, the LCD screen on the camera changes to show what its pointed at and the red record light comes on. When I close OBS the light goes off and the LCD screen goes back to a menu. This is the same behavior it does in VLC and Skype.

I'm experiencing something like this with my Q4N, and I'm on a Mac. I can see in my USB devices that it is connected, however it's as if the camera doesn't know it's connected, because the LCD display doesn't display a picture, only a black screen with white Q4N on it. No software recognizes it as a webcam. It's currently at firmware version 1.00

I put firmware version 1.20 on an SD card, however the camera won't boot into firmware update mode, possibly because the battery doesn't have enough of a charge. I'll contact Zoom support on Monday, and update this thread with what they say.

Fixed it - it's a resolution issue. You need to go to Video Properties on the source, then on Resolution set to "Custom" and then select one from the list.

Hi. I have same problem with zoom q4 (windows 10, all drivers are installed). Tried OBS Classic, tried trick with resolution - didn't work.
However it worked for MAC. Is there any solution to fix it for windows?

Had the same problem with my Zoom Q4n, running on windows. Installing the firmware update (downloaded from the zoom webpage) fixed it. There is also a tutorial on how to do the update on youtube (same procedure for q4 and q4n).

Howdy, same exact issue. I've tried dang near every release of OBS Studio and Classic, I have tried different USB cables and ports, I have tried with and without SD cards, I have tried updating the firmware (mine was already 1.20 but re-updated it anyway), have tried the resolution trick, have tried updating drivers, and everything else suggested here. Nothing works. Weirdly enough, this used to work just fine in August (which was the last time I used it) and as far as I can tell NOTHING has changed besides OBS Studio version and maybe Windows 10 version.

Any more clever ideas? I'm out at this point.

I think this would be the useful log-file. The source for the Q4 was called Webcam. It does seem to be experiencing errors, but I'm definitely not knowledgeable to know what exactly it means.

Have you tried changing the resolution? Try Custom and go through the list it offers and see if any of them work. I have this problem a lot when changing cameras when the old resolution isn't supported by the new camera.

Uploading the most recent one in which I redo the webcam capture.

Yes, I tried changing the resolution. I have tried every setting relating to the Video Capture Source in OBS.

Other issues related to this: When the Q4 is plugged in, OBS lags when entering properties of that source. It also freezes when attempting to exit. Exiting only works when unplugging the Q4.

What I did before this log was create a new Video Capture Source and direct it to the Q4. It does not work and causes the issues I mentioned above. If that's not present in the log, I'm sorry. I may not fully understand how the log works. How can I best reflect my issues in the log, or any other way to you?

Logs are per launch of OBS. One of the logs from the actual logs folder may show what you're trying to show.

Sorry for all of the trouble. Here is exactly what I did and the log file that goes with it.

Started OBS. Plugged in Q4. Turned on. Set to Webcam USB mode. Added Video Capture device named "Q4". OBS lags for awhile (about 10 seconds) then finally opens. Set Resolution to Custom and 1280 x 720. Clicked OK. Clicked Properties. Lags again. (about 10 seconds). Still blank display. Canceled out of Properties. Closed OBS (lags about 10 seconds) and Reopened. Uploaded Last Log Log File. Here is the URL to the log file.

Hopefully I've done it right now? Sorry again for chasing around this problem.
