Question / Help Is OBS the solution I've been looking for?

Hey guys,

I'm looking around for a better solution for live broadcast and I'm hoping that OBS will be that, but I had a hard time figuring out if it will solve my problems from content of the website. Surprisingly, there are no existing forum questions titled "Adam, here's the answer to your questions," so I hope you'll indulge some questions that might have answers available elsewhere.

I have the beginnings of a video setup at my church. Right now we have a firewire camcorder sending video to ubuntu and the audio comes off our mixer's auxillary outputs (the same mixer that handles front-of-the-house duties). The computer runs ubuntu and the audio is routed via JACK. We're using dvgrab to pull all the sources together and send it off to the hard drive and to Red5 on a remote server via RTMP.

This apparently works for the most part but I run into a few problems on a regular basis that makes this setup less than idea. I'm hoping OBS will help us solve these issues.
  1. If I zoom the camera, at all, the frames tend to jump rather than a relatively smooth transition. The Audio looses sync (and in the logs, i get audio XRun events) and falls behind a noticeable fraction of a second... do this a few times and it gets worse.
  2. Even when I don't change the zoom the audio can be way out of sync, but not for everyone. The other day, I was broadcasting a concert and in contact with someone in Zambia who was watching. They had no real issues, but someone close by mentioned that the audio was several minutes out of sync.
One other point. Right now we're also broadcasting audio only from Icecast (since we're mostly spoken word, its a rather modest mono feed)

I can't justify spending more money on audio or video interfaces unless I can get things in sync. Make it work before you make it better, sort of thing.

Will OBS on linux solve my problem or am I going to have to move to windows and use OBS on windows? Can I get passable results (proof of concept) with the current setup or am I going to have to splurge on interfaces to get anything consisntent?

Your help is greatly needed!
Adam
