Question / Help Is it possible to do this with OBS? (Separate gameplay/mic/skype call

Hey guys, I use Shadowplay and a bought license for Youtube Video Maker (I know it ain't pro, but it is decent for a starter tool imo, and not super expensive), and I think I need some better tools. Thats why I'm thinking about OBS.

Now, I need to know, if this is possible to do with OBS:

1. If you record a gameplay video with a Microphone and a webcam, is it possible to make them have their layers each? So I can change the volume between gameplay and my mic?

2. Is it possible to record a skype call, so I can get my friend in the video as well, on a separate track? Me and my partner wants to do some videos together, and we have already done so, but sometimes my voice is too high comparing to hers and the game, and right now I can only change the whole audio for everything, instead of only voice.

Yep use virtual audio or VB-Audio Cable.

Shadowplay though doesn't as far as i'm aware allow audio to be recorded to separate tracks though OBS does.

So if I use OBS for game recording, and Virtual Audio or VB-Audio Cable, to lead over to Audacity for recording, or am I wrong?

Should I edit and clip my video in OBS, or should I export it to another program to make the final edit?

I would record both game and audio within OBS. You will need to set the output to .mkv if you require multi track or .mp4 if you don't want to remux the .mkv for editing. Then edit the recording once you have finished in your preferred editor with multi audio track support.

I've found VB-Audio cable to be less buggy then Virtual audio, but both will allow you to have mutli tracks which you can control independently, e.g.

Mic - default (under windows recording options)
Skype - VB 1
Game - default (e.g. speakers / headphones)

(config would give you 3 audio tracks which could be edited independently pre (during recording taking place) or post (editing phase)

Within OBS Audio select each audio track (Mic Default, Skype VB 1 and Game Default) Ensure that you have also selected / checked which track under the cog on the main OBS preview screen that you want that audio to be recorded on. (can explain further if you need). OBS allows 4 tracks, so track 1 mic, track 2 skype, track 3 game and track all you could combine all to save editing if you need once you have the right audio levels.

If you are using noise reduction software then you might need to input the default mic into that and output that via say VB-2 into OBS so you get the effects applied before its recorded within OBS.

So when I have installed VB-Audio, it it a tool I use next to OBS, or is it a plugin?

I guess I can also change the volume individually in OBS, or do I have to use Audacity for editing there?

The virtual audio device give you extra audio playback and record inputs and outputs within windows, a bit like an audio mixer. It also provides some basic audio routing via voice meeter if needed.

The VA isn't OBS specific its more of a plugin for windows.

What is it you are using audacity for? effects? if so you can still use this.

So I install Virtual Audio, it makes separate channels for game, my voice, skype, and these channels are then also visible inside OBS so I can edit them separately? Or do I just add additional tracks into OBS and put the files in there?

I would use Audacity to adjust the volume, or is that also possible inside OBS?

Yes you need to assign the audio channels in windows and for skype within the application and then in OBS.

If Audacity its just volume then use OBS as this can be done at the preview window stage for each audio device. (or within widowns playback / record)

To allow for you to hear both skype and game audio into the same say headphones you will need voicemeeter also to allow you to route this back into a single track / channel.

If you use the following say for OBS

Mic - default (under windows recording options)
Skype - VB 1
Game - VB 2 (e.g. speakers / headphones)

then you will only hear in your headphones the game audio and not skype. This is correct for OBS but in order for you to hear both Skype (or another application on VB 1 e.g. spotify) with with game audio in your headphones without affecting the OBS tracks / recording spilt you will need the following also

Voice Meeter (free or can donate) app basically a virtual audio mixer,

Input 1 = Skype VB 1
Input 2 = Game VB 2

Output = VB - 1 (ensure within windows this is set to default audio playback)

Note: Using multi audio tracks can be complicated so it can take some getting used to. I'm also assuming you are using OBS on the same PC as you are recording from.

So I need Virtual Audio to split the audio, and I need Voice Meeter to be able t hear everything in my headset after everythng has been split?

Allright. And I'm done with this, I just close down the programs, and it will reverse all the changes, or do I have to change everything back?

You would need to reverse it if you wanted it back to how it is, or you can keep voice meeter open when you need to hear game audio to skype via your headphones / speakers. You could also swap between the windows playback devices as and when you needed to use OBS in this way, but skype would need the audio pointing to the older playback windows device.

Ok, it's just because I also do some music on my system, with an external soundcard, and I don't want to screw up my music studio (I use it on both systems)

I got one more question:

I've been thinking about adding two headsets to my PC by using cable splitters, will Virtual Audio be able to split these two?

two headsets? for two people to listen / use the mic? if you are using the cable spillter and presuming thats going in to a single say 3.5mm jack then no as windows / VA will see the single input / output as 1 not 2

Okay I installed the software, and tried to get it to work.

I should probably read more about OBS, cus I can't even record video in the program.

After I made a scene, I use Game Capture as my source, yet the screen is just black even when I am in the game. It doesnt record it at all.

Also, I can see that there are people who has these option:

But meanwhile I only have these:

I have no idea how to set these things up at all. I tried to run this guide, but it doesnt explain how I get additional

You are using OBS Classic. Both the helping squad image and the video you linked to are of OBS Studio. I'd suggest installing OBS Studio.

Okay guys, I bought the additional cables for Voice Meter.

I think I kinda understand it now, but I'm still a little confused. I don't know how to allocate to the different channels.

Game is probably Desktop sound, then the first Aux is my microphone, and then I have to set the speakers in Skype to Audio Cable A right? And then put Audio Cable A into Aux Sound 2.

And then I have to use Voicemeter, where I put my mic and Audio Cable A into my speakers as hardware output, or am I completely wrong?
