Question / Help Is it even worth streaming at 960x540 at 1800?

So looking online I notice that everyone says don't stream at less than 720p but I run OBS Auto-Configuration Wizard and it recommends 960x540 at a video bitrate of 1800. Is this even worth it? I didn't think my interent was that slow.

Run a speedtest and send the results, Ookla's should do fine. That bitrate seems way too low. Also, what will you be streaming? You might be able to get higher than 960x540.

Upload is 20.71 and download is 6.31, so pretty bad

I want to stream SNES or lower games mainly. Do I need to get faster internet? This is pretty much the only service.

If it's only SNES games, you should have absolutely no issues. Change the bitrate to, say, 3,000, and stream in 1280x720 at 30fps (since SNES games are only in 30fps or lower. Also, unless using upscaling to make your SNES games look HD, then don't stream in 720p. If keeping it at the default resolution, stream in 240p, as the native SNES resolution is 256x224.)

What if I have my webcam in there?
It depends on the size of the webcam. If it's going to be taking up, say, a sixteenth of the screen and put into a corner, 240p should still be fine. If it's going to be larger or on the side, you should go for 360p minimum, 720p maximum, 480p ideally. 30fps still is fine.

This should only need 240p. (assuming you have no overlay)
This will be better with 480p.

yeah, that is about the size of what my webcam is going to be, the small one. I don't see 240p as an option, I get:

1280x720p
1152x648
1096x616
960x540
852x480
768x432
696x392

I don't get a 240p option, those are the only ones 720p and under.

Also, what if I have text, like when I stream and such, do I need a higher resolution?

If you stream with text, 852x480 is probably what you should pick. That should give a good balance between stream quality and performance, while still being under what the recommendation. Don't know why you aren't seeing 240p though.

Is there a way to avoid scaling? I'm capturing a few windows not my full screen, can't I just resize the captured windows to fit? I don't see an option for my Base (Canvas) Resolution to be set at 852x480. Doesn't this mean my PC will need to work harder?

No, there's an option somewhere in output that makes it work harder but base resolution is fine
