I use a high-power microscope to examine specimens of small insects. I can attach my Nikon D90 to the microscope, and using the hdmi output from the camera in LiveView mode I should be able to view the result on my laptop screen - I have downloaded OBS Studio and use a USB3 capture lead to connect to the hdmi (normally output) port on the laptop. What settings in OBS should I then use - it seems a pretty complex suite.

I think you may be overthinking this.
If you're connecting your Nikon to the microscope, and then also to your laptop, then you can run OBS on the laptop and capture anything on the display of the laptop with display capture.
The purpose of USB3 capture hardware would be to connect the Nikon to the computer that way instead of using LiveView. You don't need a capture lead to capture your computer's display, and that's all you will get by connecting it to the HDMI output port of the laptop.
