Question / Help Input device capturing desktop audio

For some reason a few of my applications (e.g. Discord, OBS, Audacity, Voicemeeter - but NOT the windows 10 sound recorder app) will pick up desktop audio (including games?) as well as my microphone input. It even appears I do not need a microphone plugged in for desktop audio to be captured (with the correct sequence of steps so that the input device is still considered active by the applications)! This is not using stereo mix, that has been disabled, and the applications are using the microphone input device.

I have tried all of the sound properties, messing with devices, updating drivers, reinstalling drivers (went from Realtek HD to unofficial Realtek UAD while I was having this problem and that didn't fix it). I'm about ready to give up at this point and just turn the volume of my desktop down really low when using the microphone.

Except apparently in this person's case it didn't happen with games. I tried his solution, it didn't work.
