In-game source overlay

A very nice feature would be to show any source as an overlay ingame, so you can see exactly how your stream is looking when your playing.

Forexample the webcam, any images, twitch chat and so on.

Xsplit gamecaster have atleast the ingame webcam overlay, and it doesnt seem to use any extra resources, so i cannot see any reason this shouldnt be implemented. It seems like a simple fix.

There is no code in place that would enable OBS to render inside of the hook, specialy content from other sources. It's not simple at all to do that.

There is a very, very, very big difference between a simple idea and a simple implementation of an idea. This is a simple idea with an extraordinarily complex implementation.

In my opinion, getting a second monitor is a fantastic investment for streaming, so you can see chat and the OBS preview, or whatever else you need to do on a second monitor.

I'm personally way too busy to make something like that right now, it's an innovative idea but there's really no real need for something like that when you have multiple monitors and/or especially no need if the game has borderless/windowed modes available (which is becoming very common now). I commend them for their innovation, but honestly I feel like it's a bit unnecessary, and that the time could have been spent elsewhere improving things that actually matter.\

Technology is progressing to the point to where fullscreen mode in games is not really all that necessary, and games are now more often than not implementing borderless mode to allow instant/safe alt-tabbing. Making a program that basically centers around fullscreen mode feels like an ultimately fruitless endeavor, but still a cool idea.

The rewrite's hook will be completely programmable, so I mean if someone other than myself wants to add this sort of functionality, I'll make sure they have the tools to do so if I'm able.

Would definitely be cool.
Back in the day (dot dot dot) when I used LiveStream Producer, I could always see in-game how many viewers I had at all times via their overlay. A red dot with a number next to it. Short and sweet.

Well little details like that are much more doable, I think that's not out of the question. One of the biggest complaints I have with game capture is that they don't know when it's active. I think that something does need to be added, and perhaps we can definitely get some information displayed (if a hotkey is pressed at least). So I'll see what I can do about that at least. Hm, perhaps even displaying the stream preview itself in the game isn't out of the question either.

Actually, hmmmm, I just thought of a really cool idea for doing all these things that would be super easy and still efficient.

I'm actually really glad we had this discussion. I'll see what I can do in the rewrite. Perhaps we can even expect big things, because I now have a plan (though no promises! people will yell at me if I make promises)
